US Reviewed Allegations Against Staley, Black in Epstein Case

Prosecutors reviewed allegations of sexual misconduct against former finance executives Jes Staley and Leon Black at Jeffrey Epstein’s New York residence, according to documents recently released by the US Justice Department.

An unidentified woman alleged that Staley, a senior executive at JPMorgan Chase & Co. at the time, raped her after forcing her to touch his genitals, according to an internal memo prepared in December 2019 by federal prosecutors.

Staley, 69, went on to become chief executive officer of Barclays Plc, but his repeated attempts to downplay his dealings with Epstein ended his career at the British bank. He ultimately received a lifetime ban from holding senior roles in the UK financial services industry.

The woman also told investigators that, around 2011 or 2012, Epstein instructed her to give a massage to Black, then CEO of Apollo Global Management Inc. She “attempted to give Black an ordinary massage, but Black began initiating sexual contact,” according to the memo. The woman “ran out of the room” and complained to Epstein, “who laughed it off as a funny incident.”
