John McCain Receives The Most Lavish NRA Donations - addicting info dot org - well, gollleee!

so i went to look up this bob barr 'fellow' (he's apparently a whipped-cream licker ), and wiki seems to say he was ON THE BOARD of the NRA..at the SAME TIME he was in the House. period.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Barr

footnotes (6,7) and footnote 84 under Political Associations, so 2001-2003...um...

do i need to get my eyes checked?

but that's just an aside.

to wit!

from link below:

there appears to be one letter of the alphabet slightly over-represented in the above chart...

15 (i think) states. only 2 swing states (right?)

http://www.addictinginfo.org/2012/12/17/john-mccain-receives-the-most-lavish-nra-donations/

about 1/2 way down-

"More from from McCain’s 2008 Senate campaign website:

John McCain opposes backdoor attempts to restrict Second Amendment rights by holding gun manufacturers liable for crimes committed by third parties using a firearm, and has voted to protect gun manufacturers from such inappropriate liability aimed at bankrupting the entire gun industry. McCain says, “Neither justice nor domestic peace are served by holding the innocent responsible for the acts of the criminal.”

Translation: McCain wasn’t even trying to hide that he is for protecting gun manufacturers, not gun-owning individuals, here."

***skip 1 ¶

"Here’s a good example of McCain sucking up to Big Gun (Todd S. Purdum quotes McCain in an article for The New York Times, Aug 17, 1999):

If you want to take every gun in and dump it in the ocean, I’ll still take you to a Web site where it teaches children how to build a pipe bomb. And I’ll take you to a Web site where the worst kind of hate language that is terribly offensive to all of us exists. I can take you to a video game being sold to our children where the object of the game is to kill police. I understand the importance of weapons, but to define that as being the major cause [of youth violence], there’s a whole lot of causes.

Translation: “Why don’t we ban cars / knives / bombs / blunt objects, because they can hurt or kill people, too,” “Free speech that includes hateful things we don’t like is to blame, not guns” and “Gun violence is due to pop culture / scary web sites / video games / TV / movies / society / comic books / horror novels / music / musicians / Goths / single moms — not guns”: a trifecta!"

***
near the end-

"McCain has also voted for allowing weapons in checked baggage on Amtrak trains, against background checks at gun shows, for loosening license & background checks at gun shows, for maintaining current gun sale laws (in other words, not requiring guns be sold with mandatory trigger locks), against another gun registration / trigger lock law specifically restricted to Washington, D.C., and for allowing firearms in National Parks.

If we are going to have serious discussions about gun violence in this country, we need to separate the interests of gun manufacturers (the group the NRA really supports) from responsible gun owners, we need to get serious about sensible restrictions on the types of weaponry and ammunition civilians are allowed to buy, own, and use, and hold politicians like John McCain accountable for his voting record–good and bad–on gun control, gun registration, gun show background checks, waiting periods, “concealed carry” / transport of weapons and other ammunition-, body armor- and gun-related legislation."

last line - "We can do better than this."

right below the pic of all the pistols

Per the Associated Press’ Scott Lindlaw (Aug 17, 1999):

McCain favors outlawing cheaply made handguns called Saturday night specials, and favors mandating safety locks on certain guns. He said he is intrigued by new technology that electronically identifies a person handling a gun, allowing only the owner to fire it. McCain rallied Senate Republicans behind a Democratic measure requiring background checks at gun shows.

The chart shows contributions from 1989 to 2012. Because he was the nominee, it is not surprising that he is at the top - and much higher than anyone else.

I made similar comments in the past when Kerry contributions from various industries were condemned as higher than others ignoring that they were mostly to his Presidential campaign. (Obviously, not the NRA which hated him.)

and?

why do you make these comments?

under 2nd chart

The Center for Responsive Politics explains the methodology behind the above statistics:

The numbers on this page are based on contributions from PACs, soft money donors, and individuals giving $200 or more. (Only those groups giving $5,000 or more are listed here. Soft money applies only to cycles 1992-2002.) In many cases, the organizations themselves did not donate; rather the money came from the organization’s PAC, its individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals’ immediate families. Organization totals include subsidiaries and affiliates.

The NSSF may be of particular interest to Addicting Info readers because it primarily donates to Democrats, which is unusual, and because it is located near Newtown, Connecticut, where the recent Sandy Hook school massacre took place.

It is likely that McCain would still benefit from the NRA’s largesse even if he hadn’t run for President, because (with very few exceptions) McCain promotes Big Gun’s points of view faithfully. Interestingly, McCain may not even be a current gun owner:

Dec 2012

highlighted McCain, Clinton, Obama and Kerry as the top beneficiaries.

My point, then and now, was that anyone COULD remove the contributions for the Presidential runs and look at the chat that has just Senate campaigns. Even then, it would be good to scale them so they are NOT comparing say Chambliss, with his 2 races, vs McCain with far more. (This is more the mathematician/statistician in me than anything political. )

What I hated was that the OP's articles were all highlighting John McCain. Now, I voted, canvassed and phonebanked against him, but I doubt that he is the worst Republican. I also thought - just out of consistency - I should make the same argument I did with the Democrats. (I went further with them and actually got the amounts to the Presidential race, but didn't bother here.

I have never been a professional for any political entity - and if I would have been, it would have been a liberal Democrat!

Boehner driven to drink (NY POST)
By LEONARD GREENE
Posted: 1:43 AM, December 31, 2012

His colleagues are trying to avoid the fiscal cliff — but John Boehner may have already gone over the edge.

The negotiations drove the House speaker to Margaritaville Friday night, when he was seen downing a few at an Arlington eatery after talks ended for the day, London’s Daily Mail reported.

Boehner and his six-man security detail hit Guapo’s about three hours after he left a White House meeting with President Obama and other congressional leaders.

Boehner and his party were laughing and having a good time, the paper said. Diners said he wore a festive red sweater.

One of the things that I found to be so fascinating about the discussions with LePaige was that when he was asked how many people were members of the NRA, he said 4 million.

How has the NRA been such an influence in elections with only 4.3 million members (which is what their website says)? Am I missing something? That doesn't seem to be a huge # to me, considering the power they seem to have.

http://www.policymic.com/articles/21639/dianne-feinstein-new-assault-weapons-ban-doesn-t-go-far-enough-it-s-only-the-start

that's the one with all the good links.

with the NRA, it has to be connected to gerrymandering somehow. Dems got ike 1.2 or 2 million MORE votes, but still couldn't take the House.

maybe they take that 4 million and use it ALL in certain districts- "our 4 million will tell your voters not to vote for you" kind of thing? if that makes sense?

you could write a book on it, i'm sure. you're right, they ARE a minority, so...?!?!? it ain't right!

plus they have 10x the money of the Brady Campaign...

gerrymandering, though. BIG PROBLEM!!!

Republicans in Pennsylvania, however, took a state that is two or three points more Democratic than the country as a whole, and created 12 districts (out of 18) that are more Republican than the country as a whole. They did so by creating what can only be called a group of Rorschach-inkblot districts in southeastern Pennsylvania.

All of which raises the question, with public opinion so negative toward Congress and the Democrats garnering over a million more votes, how did the Republicans manage to retain control?

Two words: redistricting and gerrymandering. Both created a firewall, along with Super PAC and 501(c) (fake charity) money injected into House races, allowing the Republicans to keep a diminished majority.

After the 2010 census Republican-controlled legislatures created more districts favorable to the election of Republicans; the existence of so many safe seats — on both sides, but fewer for Democrats — meant that only 60 districts were actually “in play.” (Democrats formerly had the upper hand in gerrymandering.)
