Ukrainian art--musical, visual and written--just hits differently. There's a unique soulfulness to it all that is entirely natural and beautiful.
On a related note, I saw the documentary
2000 Meters to Andriivka this week. It follows a Ukrainian military unit attempting to re-capture a small village in Eastern Ukraine. Much of the footage comes via helmet cams on the soldiers' bodies, which puts you literally right in the middle of the battle. The village has been long decimated to rubble at this point but the soldiers want to take it for no other reason that rehoisting the Ukrainian flag in the hope that it will be rebuilt one day.
It was an absolutely devastating watch--made by the same filmmaker who made the Oscar winning documentary
20 Days in Mariupol--but it does demonstrate the Ukrainian insistence to keep fighting for their own homeland at all costs, down to the last man.
