"Florida: I’m Tired of These Mother***kin’ Snakes In This Mother***kin’ State "

"The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has announced the 2013 Python Challenge beginning in January."

"In addition to Burmese Pythons, there are other python species that have been imported and dumped into the Everglades. And this is even worse news.

If the two python species mate, they may spawn a hybrid species, as has happened in captivity. And because of a biological phenomenon called hybrid vigor, there’s an off chance the resulting snakes could be hardier, more powerful predators—assuming they’re not sterile, as many hybrids are—USGS’s [Robert] Reed said.

Some Florida Republicans begged their Congressional colleagues to institute a ban on the import and collection of these species. But the rest of the Republicans on the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, Oceans, and Insular Affairs killed the bill earlier this month.

The subcommittee was lobbied by the United States Association of Reptile Keepers (USARK), arguing that there’s no reason to believe a ban would stop “all” snake attacks and therefore no reason to even try. They also denied that snakes were even responsible for the decline in wild mammals.

Rep. Steve Southerland (also of Florida… but nowhere near the Everglades) declared the bill, “open season on business. It’s open season on enterprise, on freedom.” Does this political response sound familiar?"

They are exotic animals, there is a high risk of injury with snakes. No one needs a snake.

It's ok to cause millions of damage to an ecosystem because of someones desire to own a Burmese python? The truth is that only zoos are qualified to own these animals. A private owner cannot be trusted with an animal that could cause literally millions in damage if it escapes. These things grow to over 15 feet long and 250 pounds. People have been killed by such snakes. Why do you need such a dangerous animal?

After completing an online training course and attending an open house about pythons and other invasive species, competitors will proceed to hunt their prey in four wildlife management areas in southern Florida: Francis S. Taylor, Holey Land, Rotenberger and Big Cypress.

As per the rules outlined on pythonchallenge.org, participants must kill the pythons in “a humane manner that results in immediate loss of consciousness and destruction of the brain.” The contest’s site does indeed offer “euthanasia” recommendations, and suggests shooting the snake in the head with a captive bolt or decapitating it with a machete.

doubt it about the NRA- you have to take a SAFETY COURSE....AND.....no BULLETS! (captive bolt?)

the environment if it were to escape. We can't allow some people to entertain such a "hobby" if it could pose a serious risk to other people or the environment. Want a corn snake? Fine. All boas, pythons etc need to be banned however.

The problem isn't the snakes. It's irresponsible snake owners. The snakes don't let themselves go, people do. If snakes are outlawed, only outlaws will have snakes. And if a few kids are killed by snakes, then that's the price that society, unfortunately, has to pay for our freedom to own snakes. Frankly, I think the whole problem is mental illness. Only someone with a mental illness would let great big snakes loose into the wild. Responsible snake owners don't do that. They keep their snakes locked up. So the real problem here is mental illness. I suggest that, for our children's safety, armed snake wranglers with even bigger snakes be present at each school. If those mammals had owned bigger snakes, they wouldn't have disappeared. Studies show that the more snakes there are in a society, the fewer mammal deaths. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but it's true.

Some time ago, a cable TV technician in Florida was bitten by a green mamba, native to Africa, closely related to cobras.

http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2009-08-21/news/0908200456_1_green-mamba-ernie-jillson-venom-response-unit

I remember hearing on Discovery, NatGeo or some similar channel where Hurricane Andrew released a lot of these formerly-captive snakes into the wilds of Florida. Since most of them come from subtropical climates, Florida is "ideal" for them to spawn.

One herpetologist on the TV show said he had collected shed snakeskin from an Indian Cobra.

Ranger, there's a python trying to get into my tent! Family discover 17ft snake on Everglades camping trip

A holidaying family stumbled upon a huge 17-foot Burmese python as they picnicked in the Everglades.

The collosal snake, one of the mostly deadly in the world which kills by asphyxiating its victims and swallows dead prey whole, was shot by the Park ranger after it emerged from the bushes.

A video shows the dead snake seeming to go on forever as it is dragged into the open. Those watching comment that they believe it was pregnant - with one adding: 'We really wanted to get it before it laid all its eggs'.
