Does your thinking include the approximately two million people on emergency unemployment insurance getting their ui cut off? Because that is what happened, effective Dec. 29. This is a part of the "fiscal cliff" deal and these funds should be a part of any deal that may be struck.
And if you are for cutting off the funding, shame on you. It is obvious that those who want ui funding cut have no sympathy whatsoever for poor people.

(48,181 posts)I vote for "jump". Within one week the idiots in the house will be begging for a deal.

(10,602 posts)Between the GOP wanting major cuts and no new taxes on the rich there is no where to go. Part of the deal they want is to end unemployment benefits. I am sure they have not given up on that idea. Of course, if the info were out the media would hide it.
We don't know for sure what the GOP is actually proposing. For all I know they want the end of Obamacare in the package.

(14,255 posts)And I have already read that hey, granny can skip a meal or two if it means guaranteed benefits for those working now - when raising the cap just a bit would solve everything - so as a granny on SS, I will just say don't look to voters for any of this stuff, look to our "leaders". The voters are already successfully being set against each other.
You know, Obama could have led with raising the SS cap to $300,000 and settled for $250,000 or whatever numbers will work, instead of fucking starting with chained CPI. He could have started with demanding medicare being able to negotiate with Pharma.
But no, he started with a bad thing that will inevitably show up early this year. Hope I am wrong, but I doubt it.
He is a Third Way guy.

(90,061 posts)Also the Teapublicans are going to screw them even worse if we don't stop them now. You put up with extortion, you get to put up with it forever.

(12,336 posts)I'm trying to see where I actually laid any blame on anyone.
Nope, still can't see it. Stop trying to read into something that simply isn't there. Fyi, if you've ever read any of my posts in here (obviously you haven't), I blame the republicans and only the republicans for this mess we're currently in. So stop putting words into my mouth, as it were and just read the damn post.

(90,061 posts)Got it?
Apparently neither do you. You wanna put words in my mouth? Go right ahead. You'll believe what you want to anyway.

(90,061 posts)"shame on you" that's what you said, and that IS blaming someone. So kiss my grits.

(22,336 posts)If the choice is a bad choice in 2012 or a better choice in 2013, we're better off going off the so-called fiscal cliff.
The idea is to NOT allow them to cut things people need, including unemployment insurance, SS, and all the other programs they don't like.
davidpdx
(22,000 posts)massive cuts in entitlement programs. Not just unemployment insurance, but Medicare, SS, education, the list goes on. The people who lose those benefits will only be doing so temporarily. Once a deal is reached everyone who is owed money will have to be paid.
It is the Republicans that are holding the country hostage. Stop blaming Democrats for wanting a better deal. We did win the election.

(4,106 posts)and if we really had a choice things would be different. If you give a bully your sandwich everyday eventually he's going to want your milk too. It never should have been part of the deal to begin with but here we are we. Many are tired of the one sided compromise we've been getting. From what I've heard Washington is more concerned about the market that anything else. Even corporations are saying go ahead and raise my taxes. They are more worried about their stock. It's an austerity crisis. No one wants it but there comes a time when we must confront the ridiculousness that is the GOP teacorp. As someone who is not rich I agree.

(1,628 posts)Now everyone else can blame the other side for not negotiating, but this was the super committee's best effort. Why expect anything less?

(65,057 posts)You say in another post that you blame the republicans. But, their policies are based on a short term thought process that gives now and doesn't look at the long term consequences. And now look where we are.
And, you want those of us who, a) don't believe it's really a "cliff", but a speed bump, and; b) want to take a longer view of things, to feel guilty about ignoring the impact on some people out of work.
Not going to work. I'm not going to employ the republican mindset to achieve democratic results.

(327 posts)one side wants to keep them alive for continued political gain and the other wants to kill them now for political gain, either way the poor are screwed and neither side reeally wants to solve the problem.
So go ahead and cheer and clap for another useless deal that resolves nothing.
