I remember Valentine's Day in elementary school...

We brought Valentine's for the entire class and teacher along with a box we had decorated to receive Valentine's from others...it was fun...

I especially liked decorating my"mailbox", setting it out on my desk, and seeing what everyone else's looked like. I think most years we were instructed to decorate a coffee can - back when they were all metal and everyone seemed to have access to one.
My grandkids still get to do this at school, and seem to enjoy it (although Valentine's Day seems to take a back seat to the very popular Halloween Parade).

and in addition, my students picked a name of a classmate out of a hat days in advance. They then wrote a "friendly letter" (in the friendly letter format, which is a "thing" in elementary school) to their secret Valentine, with the topic sentence being what they liked about the person. On Valentine's Day each student read the letter out loud without revealing the recipient's name, and other students listened to the description and guessed who it was. It was hilarious and fun. At the end, students gave the letter to their "secret Valentine", and since it was full of compliments and fun memories, they loved it. Many parents and students told me that they kept the letters for years!

Everybody got valentines and there were special ones for teachers. Usually someone's mother made cookies or cupcakes. I went to school in a rural community.
