Jeremy Carl, President Trumps nominee for a senior State Department post, struggled at his confirmation hearing on Thursday to answer what should have been an easy question, since he wrote an entire book about it: What is white identity and why is it under threat?
After nervously rambling about white food and Black food, white music and Black music and white worship styles, Mr. Carl told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that a loss of a dominant white culture is weakening the country. That notion has become an intellectual framework animating much of what has been described as the New Right, and Mr. Carl, who would if confirmed be the assistant secretary of state for international organization affairs, is one of its most prominent proponents.
But Mr. Carls halting defense of his theory on white erasure, along with previous statements about race and Jews, has put his nomination in danger. A Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee chairman, John Curtis, Republican of Utah, came out in opposition immediately after the hearing was gaveled closed.
I do not believe that Jeremy Carl is the right person to represent our nations best interests in international forums, said Mr. Curtis, who chairs the subcommittee with jurisdiction over democracy and human rights, accusing Mr. Carl of making insensitive remarks about Jewish people.

(3,423 posts)White erasure' is just the most recent manifestation of white grievance politics and racist replacement theory.
There is no 'white erasure' it is a euphemism contrived by the racist right to conceal the conservative agenda of hate.

We are essentially moving, he told Tucker Carlson in April 2024, to what is effectively a postwhite America.
In case that wasnt quite enough, Carl has also criticized Jewish people for wanting to relitigate the Holocaust, while claiming that Jews are overrepresented in the ranks of American billionaires.
In a normal and healthy political environment, these revelations would have led the White House to pull the nomination. But Carl, still backed by Trump, nevertheless went to Capitol Hill on Thursday for his Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing, where Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut asked him about his stated concerns regarding the erasure of white culture. To put it mildly, Carl struggled to defend his right-wing worldview.
Trump nominated a legit white nationalist to a top post at the State Department. I asked him some basic questions about his belief in the âerasure of white cultureâ. Watch this embarrassing, fumbling answer. Like he has never before been asked to explain his views.

....After the hearing, one Senate Republican, Utahs John Curtis, announced his opposition to the nominee.
After reviewing his record and participating in todays hearing, I do not believe that Jeremy Carl is the right person to represent our nations best interests in international forums, and I find his anti-Israel views and insensitive remarks about the Jewish people unbecoming of the position for which he has been nominated, Curtis said in a statement.
While the Utahn is just one member, the GOP only has a one-vote advantage on the Foreign Relations Committee. In other words, if Curtis joins Democrats in opposing the nominee, he wont have the votes to advance to the Senate floor.
Given the circumstances, Carls odds of being successfully confirmed are poor and falling, but theres a larger question hanging overhead: Why in the world did the president nominate this guy, and why does Trump continue to support Carls nomination in light of everything weve learned about his indefensible worldview?
How did this racist asshole get nominated?
