(22,857 posts)Lewy body dementia, also known as LBD, is the second most common type of dementia after Alzheimer's disease. Protein deposits called Lewy bodies develop in nerve cells in the brain. The protein deposits affect brain regions involved in thinking, memory and movement. There are two forms of LBD that cause cognitive symptoms dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson's disease dementia.
Lewy body dementia causes a decline in mental abilities that gradually gets worse over time. People with LBD might see things that aren't there, known as visual hallucinations. They also may have changes in alertness and attention.
People with Lewy body dementia commonly have symptoms of Parkinson's disease. These symptoms might include rigid muscles, slow movement, trouble walking and tremors.

(1,353 posts)One of the hardest things about it is the fluctuations in a person's cognitive state. My loved one could be really out of it: acting out and hallucinating one day and then be totally back to his normal self the next morning. The normal times were especially heartbreaking because in those times, he knew something was terribly wrong with him. It's really scary to hear that it's the second most common dementia after Alzheimer's.

In 2002 when my husband, daughter, and I saw him in performance at Northrop Auditorium, he paced the stage like a caged animal.
I never laughed so hard in all my life. We were up in the balcony area and I had a great view of Robin Williams.
