According to the Save Act, your birth certificate and current name must match, which means that women will be at a disadvantage. Our side is worried about this because it will directly affect women who married and changed their names. The only sure way around this is if you have a passport ID.
But some astute person on the net says that this is unfavorable to the Republicans, because more Democrats than Republicans carry a passport. The blue States, in other words, will be impacted less than the Red States, which will, in essence, disenfranchise their own trad wives.
Interesting to think about, anyway.

(4,695 posts)are more likely to vote for Republicans than for Democrats... while for unmarried women, the opposite is true.
However, it doesn't appear that they will be able to pass this over a Senate filibuster anyway.

(54,534 posts)I realize that is mean and petty.
I could only wish that any of you had experienced the level of hate that has been directed at me from them. You might understand my point of view, were you me.
Thank you for putting up with my liberal ways and giving me a place where the constant vitriol is not poured upon me in an unceasing way.

(3,316 posts)Also, this change is likely to cause a LOT of women to reconsider doing so in the future as well. Most liberal men don't mind one bit if their partner wants to keep her maiden name. Right-wing men are much more likely to care if they don't.

(14,336 posts)Even MAGA women don't want to jump through their Nazi hoops and to obtain a passport to vote?
I'm old enough to remember when you got a passport to see Paris ... not the voting booth at the local church hall.
This is some bullshit.

(12,455 posts)The whole idea is just another plan to reduce women to second-class citizens firmly under the thumb of the men in their lives. Less higher education, early marriages from which there is no escape (tighten up divorce law) and grinding out as many babies as possible. No contraception. No abortion, of course. And no way to vote scum-bags out of office.
Happy Days!

(36,102 posts)are already talking online about reverting to our maiden names. We will change them back through the courts, update our passports, and on we go. I already talked to my husband about it and he doesn't care.

(31,304 posts)Especially for women who have been married several times, changing their last name each time. They would have to provide marriage certificates and divorce decrees to complete the chain of name changes.

(36,102 posts)will probably be a little annoying and time consuming, but I'm ready.

(264 posts)but it is very costly...a few thousand if you go thru a lawyer. Yeah you can do it on your own if you want to brave the courts but that costs too.
My name is hyphenated (which is a real pain in the butt....SS messed up!) and my husband is dead so I wanted my name back but too much hassle. I do have a recently updated passport. Wish I had never changed my name - my DIL did not.

(44,180 posts)If we need a photo ID after we have registered why doesnt the state issue photo registration cards. When I registered they sent me a registration card which I use at the polls every time. Put a photo on that and we got it made. Howis someone such as me, whos been voting in the same polling place for 30 years supposed to prove shes an American citizen right now. The people working the polls there recognize me!

(2,667 posts)They think Democratic women are all single cat ladies.
Thankfully it looks like this horrible bill will never make it through the Senate.
The only reason they are even pushing this is because the con artist will not admit he lost the 2020 election and the con artist will try everything to cheat and steal elections.

(13 posts)Rethugs know that most Americans dont have a passport. The impact on those who dont have one or cant afford one should not be underestimated. The fascists are looking at the midterms and not really beyond that because they wont need to.

(329 posts)that you wanted to keep your maiden name.
It just wasn't accepted.
I was happy to change my name because people always mispronounced it and
then they would say, "Oh, you must be .....", fill in a nationality, which I wasn't.
Anyway, nationality was a part of the conversation I never wanted to go to.
But then people mispronounced my new married name, etc.

(6,297 posts)My wife didn't. We talked about it and decided it's a weird tradition. We're married, not related, so why would want to share last names. We both have family members who send her mail as if she had changed her. We just laugh.

(12,809 posts)These mouth breathers, all own red hats, have little desire to leave the cove they inbreed in. They have no idea how to get a passport and cant read enough to look it up. Probably have no birth certificate being the parents are cousins and brothers and sisters and pop out a half dozen at home. Passports have been made very hard to get here.
And if you ever watch Live PD on weekends, it is stunning how many mouth breathers get pulled over all across the country, and do not have a Fucking Drivers License. Many have trump shit stuck on the vehicles they are illegally driving, sometimes without a damn license plate. And are drunk. MAGA!

(250 posts)Republicans are the ones most likely to believe that their ID will be enough, or that this wont affect them. They would be the least likely to get the documents needed.

(4,587 posts)after becoming disabled with a terminal disease. 2009 so even then you needed a photo ID to vote and travel by plane. I gathered up her divorce papers, birth certificate and every document posted on the SOS Website and headed out to the DMV. She was wheelchair bound so getting around in a car was a big job. After waiting 45 minutes at the DMV we were called to the counter. Her social security number was entered into the system and lo and behold that number was associated with another name. Yes, her maiden name from the driver license issued when she was 17. Of course I only had access to her most recent divorce papers, current drivers license and passport. Ten states away, two additional marriage certificates and two sets of divorce papers was not going to be an easy get! Even though she was backed into a corner my other sister who was with us leaned over and whispered to her that she may have to marry our cousin Billy to get her name back. Of course we burst out laughing.(when we told Billy about this later he was all in and thought it was at least a solution that would get sister an ID to vote) I was busy scooping up papers trying to leave nothing behind when a man who had been waiting and watching the shenanigans of the clerk for what seemed like forever came up to us and said, I dont know what the problem you ladies are having is but I have to say that you have the best senses of humor I have ever seen. We thanked him as it took some of the sting out of the whole debacle. We left and headed home.
You may ask how I got the whole thing worked out and why would I care knowing my sister was going to cancel out my vote. Everyone deserves their right to vote. And what I did involved using privilege to solve the problem and Im not proud of it. Technically we had every document necessary as the website list did not state all divorce proceedings back to the point of maiden name were necessary. The next DMV I went to was headed by someone who knew me. She could see that technically I did have the papers that were asked for. She could see that my sister was in a world of hurt and processed the State ID for us. So many women will lose their their right to vote and travel about if they implement the birth certificate name matching the ID 30, 40,50 years down the road. It is complete insanity. For the most part this will affect females. I guess its time to stop changing names for whatever reason.
