US Senator Mark Kelly tells BBC he will 'seriously consider' White House run

US Democratic Senator Mark Kelly has said he will "seriously consider" running for president in 2028 as he battles the Trump administration over a video in which he urged military personnel to refuse illegal orders.

The Arizona senator, who was accused of "seditious behaviour" by Donald Trump over the November clip, said he and his wife, Gabrielle Giffords, received "many" death threats after the president's comments.

"We get them on a weekly basis now," he told BBC Newsnight. "We had to get security to protect us 24 hours a day."

Asked if he was considering a White House run, the retired Navy captain said he was considering it "because we're in some seriously challenging times".

But I would probably vote for someone else in the primary simply because I don't want to lose his Arizona senate seat, and also because I'm not sure when I've heard him speak publicly that I feel he has the same sort of charisma as a speaker and ability to get messaging across as some of the others. However, it's still very early and maybe he would change my mind during the debates. He's a good guy for sure.

Nothing negative to say about the guy. I could use the meritless but ever-popular "he'll never win in X..." schtick, but he's too likable for me to go negative on.

I'm not sure if he can get past the charisma of Newsom and Mayor Pete... or the political power of Harris v2.0

For one thing, he's taking AI seriously.

If we get the House and don't let the showboats dominate our more sensible people, Kelly could be the next president.

Chris Murphy is another.

Chris Murphy has been emphasizing for the past year that our first priority is trying to save Democracy. So he deflects when asked about 2028.
