Minority Births are in the Majority in U.S. for the First Time

White births are no longer in the majority in the United States. A study published on Jan. 30 by Amos Grünebaum, MD, and Frank A. Chervenak, MD, found this to be the case. Doctors Grünebaum and Chervenak are professors of obstetrics and gynecology at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell; Dr. Chervenak also serves as an associate dean of internal medicine.

Their study, which analyzed data from 2016 to 2024, concluded that minority births are now the majority, driven largely by a rise in Hispanic births. The doctors analyzed Center for Disease Control and Prevention data on 33 million live births in the U.S., tracking the trends by the mother’s race and ethnicity. They found that White births were 49.6 percent, collectively, and all other groups (Hispanic, Black, Asian, etc.) make up 50.4 percent of births. This discovery marks a significant demographic shift for the next generation of Americans.

“The results of our study surprised me,” said Dr. Grünebaum, the lead researcher. “This is a big deal because our country is restricting immigration and trying to increase more births simultaneously.”

White women, according to the study, tend to delay childbirth, which often leads to difficulties conceiving and a decision to have fewer children. Conversely, minority women were found to begin childbearing earlier in life and to have more children.
