Where is my Edward R. Murrow?
Given the horrific stories of neglect and intimidation of children emerging from the ICE-American Gestapo concentration camps my mind is taken back to a journalist who would not be quieted or restrained. "Harvest of Shame" probably would be restricted from appearing in today's big media world. Certainly the current CBS would never show it and if it came to that current waste of skin who runs the place she would probably demand all of the materials, burn them and then terminate everybody involved as well as turn their names over Tulsi Gabbard, Bondi and Patel for retribution actions.
Remember how the Russians kept telling lies about Chernobyl? Until the other countries in the world were detecting the radiation and fallout. Here we are being lied to and we're supposed to shut-up. Well I'm not shutting up and I and many other DU members remember a time when people who deserved to use the word "journalist" to describe themselves also refused to shut-up. A time when people of courage felt it was more important to show the world the truth than to think of being "safe" or "accepted" by the power structure in place at the time. We remember Helen Thomas asking hard, tough questions of people, no matter the political party, and being relentless in demanding answers rather than spin.
We remember when Murrow and Thomas etc. had major platforms to get the truth to us. Now the controllers of the major platforms want us to accept pablum and not be too upset. They want to feed the propaganda, get the ad dollars and not be criticized by the government powers that be. If they had been running the presses during the American Revolution they would have been leaning to the Loyalists. The First Amendment that came to be enshrined in 1791 wasn't talking about freedom of the press for the purposes of lies and propaganda but for the purpose of telling the citizens the truth and rightfully questioning the actions of their government.
How very, very far we have strayed from people in big media prioritizing the truth over their own self interests or the interests of their bosses. Where is my Edward R. Murrow? Where is my Helen Thomas? Banished for the most part in this pitiful current version we live of "1984".
