(10,587 posts)edited to add - I am not into religion, but his version of religion seems to be genuine and not based on garnishing the vote which is obviously what most, if not all, the Texas politicians I have seen in my 50 years of living here in Texas. To me that is not only a turn-off for religion but highlights the reason that I think there should be a separation of church/state.

(17,273 posts)(Full disclosure, I'm a red-letter Christian; not an evangelical nut case).
What *I* like is that he can give it back to the Christian Nationalists, etc. by book, chapter and verse. I think he's one of the firsts who I've seen actually take someone to task on scripture. He believes, like I do, in separation of church and state, and that all religions (including someone's right NOT to believe in any religion) are to be respected. But he knows the Bible and he can quote it and interpret it.
As a believer myself, I don't think it is EVER appropriate to try to cram religion - ANY religion - down someone's throat. The way people come to believe is their choice, their timing and their path. If you try to force religion on someone, their immediate reaction is always going to be to pull back because no one likes to be forced to do anything. I don't think Talarico tries to force religion. He talks openly about his own faith but he's also been very open about the Bible saying to "love your neighbor"; not "love your neighbor who believes exactly like you do."
I fail miserably on a daily basis in my own faith. But the best that I can do is to try to live by my principles and hope that I'm a good example for someone else - all the while accepting and respecting anyone who chooses to believe differently in any way, shape, form or fashion. I am no better (or worse) than someone who believes differently or doesn't believe at all. We are each on our own path.
I get the same sentiment from Talarico. I like his approach. I voted for him, and I hope he's successful. If he's not and Crockett wins the primary, I will be right there behind her supporting her with all I have.

(2,589 posts)On one hand you have modest to significant steps towards income equality, addressing every major issue in a pragmatic way, basic competency and an embrace of our founding American values.
On the other hand you have. Well:
Who's to say Who's right or wrong?

Some of these undecideds just seem to have their minds made up and aren't open to listening no matter what. (The gray sweater guy)
I like this format. It's brutal (to me).
