Iran massacre... how many killed, disappeared and jailed? 30,000?

I just heard on Velshi today that 30,000 protestors were murdered and thousands are imprisoned.

It is shocking! I had not heard that massive number before. I see an article from 1/27

Disappeared bodies, mass burials and ‘30,000 dead’: what is the truth of Iran’s death toll?
https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2026/jan/27/iran-protests-death-toll-disappeared-bodies-mass-burials-30000-dead

Does anyone else know about the numbers and what happened? This is really horrific!

1. Sadly, in a dictatorial theocracy such as this, no holds-barred response for violence against

"the other." While we have the luxury of pursuing peaceful protest from the Civil Right's Era to today (and I truly hope we can continue to do so), this only underscores that not all countries, settings, or times are so conducive to doing so. Russia being but one NON-theocratic, yet dictatorial example--there are many.

When peaceful protesters are murdered in increasing numbers I don't know that that the US will remain unchanged in terms of nonviolent response--as well.

As for the numbers in Iran, Trump sent an overt message to the protesters that he was going to intervene months ago and that regime change was going to be the result. They were emboldened or at least reassured that "help would be on the way." Sadly, they believed him and the numbers dead and imprisoned/disappeared--whatever enormous number is accurate--is the result.

2. Wow, so trump saying he was going to intervene actually caused 1000's more dead, missing, jailed.

The people of Iran were emboldened to keep at it and the numbers of harmed Iranians grew.

I am not challenging you, I am curious to see articles about this. You must have read to learn that.

If you know of any, please share.

Believe it or not, this is the informed opinion of some of our own experts. No, I am working a 16-hour ER shift so I will not be able to research links for you on that either. Coffee break only.

6. Iran is a main bastion of arch-conservative, jihadist Islamism

The Iraqi Regime (the Islamic Republic) is to Iran what the Taliban are to Afghanistan, a stupid, violent, patriarchal, arch-conservative dictatorship. All progressives and liberals should consider the Islamic Republic a main enemy on Earth. If the Islamic Republic falls and is replaced by a liberal democracy, the world would be safer. Also, other arch-conservative, violent patriarchies like Hamas and the Taliban would be on notice that their time is up.

I was very disappointed in NPR a couple of days ago. I listen every day, but they seriously dropped the ball with Iran. Yes, they did at least address the heightening tensions and the brinksmanship on getting a nuclear deal. But, when it came time to talk about the protesters who have been very brutally murdered we get this:

As we know, the Iranian security forces crushed those protests last month and killed many people. We just don't know if we'll see another uprising.

They "killed many people." It was "Iranian security forces." SMH.

and despite the brutal crackdown, bloodshed and killing from the Iranian government there are reports of new protests taking place

The Iranian people taking to the streets to protest their murderous government are incredibly brave. It's hard to imagine the terror that they are living under.
