If you apply for an account and you are a non-citizen, you have to provide your documents. Most banks have limitations on loans.

I never showed any citizenship documentation when I took out a loan. Obviously, I provided my SS number for a credit check, but a SS number doesn't prove citizenship. Two documents prove citizenship: a passport and a birth certificate. Unless you were asked for those, you didn't prove citizenship.

A bank is not going to give you a deposit or loan product without you providing a SSN or TIN. The only way to get an SSN is to have legal immigration status. So if you didn't come to the country legally, you would not have an SSN.
