The problem is that people who are constantly throwing barbs at anyone just to take sides will eventually find those attacks self-referential. Only a matter of time until it comes back to bite them. His comments age like milk outside in a heatwave

But in these divided times it'll land like a soft pillow.

While we see it as evidence of a complete phony's opportunistic grab for power, the other side will see it as Trump wisely evolving.
The people able to do something about it see it as an annoying fact that will die in the morass of current events.
