Ship traffic has plummeted with vessels holding outside the Gulf of Oman or executing U-turns mid-transit.
Most major shipowners and operators have suspended operations through the Strait of Hormuz. Namely, the Danish shipping and logistics giant, Maersk, has suspended all future transits through the Strait of Hormuz until further notice, on Sunday afternoon.
Marine insurers have also halted coverage for any voyages in the area, leaving transporters exposed to massive risk premiums or outright refusal.
Oil futures reopen for trading this Sunday evening amid widespread talk of Brent crude hitting $100 per barrel, levels last seen after Russias invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Analysts at Barclays, among other firms, have explicitly raised forecasts to that threshold, warning that a prolonged halt could block up to 20 million barrels per day, which represents about 20% of global supply.

(4,039 posts)I realize this may be a bit snarky but one of the reason's I bought an electric car last September was I didn't want to have to deal with gas price fluctuations (or availability) when sh-t like this happens. Been around long enough to remember what happens any time there is even a hint of trouble in the Middle East, which just about all the time. When someone keeps kicking you in the gillies, at what point do you finally say enough and move away from them?!?
I've had lots of conversations with my significant other about gas prices or even availability when I bought my electric car. Yea there are gas stations on just about every corner where we live, but there are a hell of a lot of electric outlets in places and you'd be surprised how many places you can just pull up and tap into a free electric charging station. And if you're going to argue about price, you can buy an older electric car for under $25k. It's not for everyone, but if you going to constantly complain about gas prices (after buying an over sized SUV or pick up truck getting 15 mpg) then I don't have a lot of sympathy for you. At some point, you have to live with your choices and stop blaming other people for doing the same thing to you over and over.

(2,292 posts)Pulled up to the pump yesterday, 20 cent increase in unleaded overnight. But diesel, which had actually calmed to below unleaded prices recently, is now 25 cents per gallon more expensive than unleaded. For those keeping track, its $3.39 for unleaded and $3.64 for diesel here in the least expensive part of Alaska.
Just bought a Ford Escape last month, not a hybrid though, just the 3 cylinder turbocharged gas engine, and as for an EV the charging network here in the north country is pathetic. But I enjoy incurring a little karmic debt knowing that all of those assholes driving the tiny penis compensator huge trucks are pretty soon not going to be able to afford to drive their piece-of-shit-sub-10-mpg toxic masculinity virtue signaling device. My quiver of gas vehicles range from 33 mpg in my Subaru to 21 mpg in my older Toyota Tacoma.
If I lived in the lower 48, Id had pulled the trigger on an EV long ago.

(34,758 posts)I got gas this week at $2.75.
I don't know what it is now.
I'm due for an oil change soon, though.

(12,344 posts)That is a picture of the very narrow straight between Iranian Qeshm Island and Bandar Pol on the mainland.
That is not the shipping channel into the Gulf, it shallow & only a mile and a half wide.
The narrowest spot in the straight is around 21 mile wide.

(1,843 posts)up. I have a hybrid SUV and get around 38mpg. I also dont drive much so should last at least 6 weeks.
We are going to CA on Tuesday for 8 days and renting a car. I expect we will be paying a lot to fill it and we will likely be doing a lot of driving while there.
