Remember this when Donald Trump tells you we can't afford health care.

President Donald Trump’s military strikes in Iran have likely cost American taxpayers over $1 billion using cursory estimates—with hundreds of millions lost on lost aircraft over the weekend—with a price tag that could approach $100 billion, depending on how long it can stretch on.

Even before the strikes properly began, transporting troops, ships and aircraft to the region likely cost the military an estimated $630 million, Elaine McCusker, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute think tank and former Pentagon budget official, told The Wall Street Journal on Saturday.

While the full scope of the military’s operation in Iran is still unclear, it’s been sizable: U.S. Central Command, or CENTCOM, said Monday the military had already struck more than 1,250 targets in Iran in the first 48 hours since strikes began, and released a list of more than 20 different military assets and weapons systems that have been used so far.

Those operations have likely added millions to the cost of the war just over the past few days, as those assets cost anywhere from $35,000 (the cost of a one-way drone) to millions (Tomahawk missiles) to produce and operate.
