1. Yes, but...

This is a great take, and definitely hits on what I'm feeling.

However, I wish people would stop thinking of evolution as ongoing improvement. Evolution is neutral, like every other scientific theory. Gravity doesn't care if you step too close to the ledge, electricity doesn't care about your life when you're running through a field in a thunderstorm, and evolution just replaces earlier models. In this case, evolution has replaced the Confederates with MAGA. In many, many corners of our country, this is who we've always been.
