Then the whole exercise was a failure. It's not "regime change" if the new regime is identical to the one it is replacing.

Trumpseth could have saved the country a few hundred billion if they had instead pumped a ton of money into the Iranian opposition, telling them we don't look to control them, but wish them success, and offer them as much clandestine aid as we can possibly funnel their way.

Something like half the population of Iran is under thirty, if I recall correctly. People that age want to go out on dates without religious/morals police looking over their shoulder 24/7. They ALSO don't want US looking over their shoulder 24/7. I'm sure half of Irangeles is cheering, but they aren't going to take up arms to return home and help out their countrymen in fighting the religious regime. They live far too comfortably now to leave it all to go risk getting killed back in Iran. If we want to replace the Mullahs with a democratically elected government, it'll have to come from their wishes, not ours. Us bombing their country while telling them we are there to help doesn't sound overly convincing. I remember George Carlin explaining God:
