Native Americans react to Sen. Markwayne Mullin's DHS appointment

Last edited Sun Mar 8, 2026, 07:37 PM - Edit history (1)

Many tribes are encouraged by Trump's choice of Sen. Markwayne Mullin, a member of the Cherokee nation, as the new DHS Secretary. ICE agents have been accused of racially profiling Native Americans.

CHUCK HOSKIN JR: He treats tribes with respect.

SIEGLER: Chuck Hoskin Jr. is chief of the Cherokee Nation and knows Mullin well from working with him in Congress, but also as a Cherokee citizen.

HOSKIN: I've had different roles in the government of the Cherokee Nation. He's had different roles in the Congress of the United States. And so over the years, we've developed a relationship, and I would call him a friend.

I'm not Cherokee, but I have my doubts. I'm betting Mullin would throw his Cherokee brethren in front of a bus to save Demento.

2. If this is referencing the NPR article, it's hard to see encouraged tribal members besides Hoskin.

I’m not Cherokee either, so know nothing of Hoskin, but it seems the only other interviewed person in the excerpt is Angelique Eaglewoman who merely expressed disappointment with how unsupportive Noem was. This obviously is an understatement as Noem has a history of hostilities with SD tribes. If by encouraged, NPR means at least he’s not Noem, then yes. Tribes and their members views vary, but Markwayne is either unknown or unliked by many tribal members in the northwest. To make claims about the 574 federally recognized native entities by referencing a Chief from the same tribe who networks with Markwayne is somewhat disingenuous. That is not to say he doesn’t have his supporters, but I hope the MSM doesn’t oversell his tribal support.

As I read the article, it made me wonder what Wilma Mankiller (former Cherokee chief) would be thinking. Also makes me wonder what Winona LaDuke is thinking.

6. AND We Can't Overlook The Fact That Mullin Is Totally Unqualified

As far as I can figure, there's only one reason for tRump to be appointing some THAT unqualified, and we all know what that is.

Not sure which of the Haudenosaunee he represents.

are you referring to your friend or to the Cherokee Nation?

The Cherokee, whose homeland territory was in GA, TN. and NC, are linguistically and culturally related to the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) nations whose homelands are in NY, with some across the border in Ontario, Canada. The Cherokee were never part of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy of 6 nations (originally 5) and are not generally referred to as Haudenisaunee. In fact they were enemies. But since Haudenosaunee means People of the Longhouse, and the Cherokee once did live in longhouses, I guess Haudenosaunee sort of fits in a broad definition of the term.

There are some Seneca and Cayuga people descended from the 6 nations Haudenosaunee Confederacy in NY living in OK today as a result of the federal gov't under Andrew Jackson trying to force them west of the Mississippi, but most stayed in NY and some who went to OK returned. They are the Seneca-Cayuga nation of OK.

Not sure from your post which people you meant when you wrote Haudenosaunee.

8. I'll guarantee you that Chump has No CLUE about Mullin's Cherokee background

All Chump knows is that Mullin is (1) relatively stupid ... (2) gullible ... and (3) easily corrupted.
Plus he looks OK on a TV screen, and that's all Chump cares about. Literally.

member is, by definition, opposed to the values and traditions of most native tribe members in the United States. They, having been a victim of racism and the waging of aggressive war against them, know better. Those I know despise MAGA and see it as a threat to their people.
