https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/iran-bombing-data-centers"Earlier this week, Iranian drones hit three Amazon Web Services (AWS) facilities in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, triggering global outages in online services. Experts believe the strikes were the first instance of American big tech companies being targeted in a military operation.
The strikes caused structural damage, disrupted power delivery to our infrastructure, and in some cases required fire suppression activities that resulted in additional water damage, the tech giant admitted in a March 2 update.
Iranian Revolutionary Guard-affiliated news claimed that Iran had targeted both Amazon and Microsoft facilities, as the Financial Times reports, though the latter has yet to experience any outages in the region.
The incidents highlight how data centers have become major targets on the battlefield. The surrounding region in the Middle East has been a major draw for US hyperscalers, as CNBC points out, which could mean that even more American assets are at risk."

(8,705 posts)Wells have already run dry, with more going dry all the time here. And this is AZ. It is HOT here so how much will our utilities go up if a data center has to keep things cool? Madness.
County Sups are holding hearings soon. They are ALL maga dimbulbs who do what big corporations want done. Maybe us NIMBYs can appeal to their native maga paranoia and push the idea that a big data center could mark our county as a target for Iranian retaliation.
Re data centers and heat: recently read that Finland data center is piping its heat off and into buildings/homes to help keep people warm. Not sure if it's real and how it would work, but I do know the desert southwest is probably not the best place for facilities that generate massive heat that has to be dealt with.
