California school official says child deportations make classrooms 'better'San Francisco Chronicle
The board meeting of a rural San Diego County school district ended on a surprising note last week, when one member remarked to the room that from a practical perspective, the deportation of children without legal status from the area would help the school district combat overcrowding in its classrooms.
The more illegal aliens with children are deported from Ramona, the better the student-to-teacher ratio, Maya Phillips, a Ramona Unified School District board member, said at the March 4 meeting, adding that the loss of families without legal status would better the quality of education for our American and legal immigrant children.
Better or lower student-to-teacher ratios are also what teacher unions advocate for, Phillips also said. I remember public comments at the February board meeting calling for exactly that: lower student-to-teacher ratio.
Though done in a public forum, with students, local residents and other board members present, Phillips comments did not elicit any immediate response, and the meeting ended just minutes later.

Maya Phillips grew up in Saint Petersburg, Russia, which was the Soviet Union at the time. She graduated from Saint Petersburg State University with a degree in German Language and Linguistics. Maya came to the U.S. in 1999 and became an American citizen in 2006. She has been working in translations and in property management in recent years. Mrs. Phillips currently serves on the Ramona Unified School District Board of Trustees. She was appointed to a vacant board seat in March 2022 and elected for a full term in November 2022, with her current term running through 2026. She is a strong advocate for academics, local control, and parental rights.

(53,374 posts)5. I don't live in California
but I have lived in, and taught in, a variety of states and all of them determined funding for school districts based on number of pupils. So, while that would reduce the ratio this year, teachers would be let go, going into next year and subsequent years.
