Two oil tankers were attacked within Iraqi waters and six ships were dispatched to rescue crew members, said Lt. Gen. Saad Maan, head of the Security Media Cell, a government entity, in a statement published on Iraq’s state news agency early on Thursday morning in the Middle East. One crew member died and 38 were rescued, he said.

Farhan Al-Fartousi, who heads the state-owned port company, told the Iraqi News Agency on Thursday that firefighting tugs from Basra Oil Port were deployed to extinguish fires on both vessels, and that search-and-rescue teams were still looking for missing crew members. The tankers were about 30 miles off the Iraqi coast, he said.
