A surge in e-bike and e-scooter crashes prompts a push for safety
University students around Florida zip through campuses on electric bikes, scooters and skateboards. But with their increased popularity, there’s also been a spike in accidents.

In February last year, Connor Lynch, a 19-year-old University of South Florida student, died while scootering. Lynch had left his house keys in a friend’s car and was scootering to pick them up. Instead, a car turned in front of him and killed him, officials said.

USF Police Chief Chris Daniel said since 2023 campus police on the Tampa campus have responded to at least 23 incidents involving electric rides.

To raise awareness about the dangers of micromobility, AAA and local law enforcement held a joint press conference at USF on Thursday. Next to the podium was a table where bright yellow vests and helmets surrounded a photo of Lynch.

are flying around everywhere. They use sidewalks, run stop signs. With a little modding from utube these things can go 30mph. I saw one go right through a red light at least 15mph on the sidewalk right in front of a cop. Nothing. I am scared to death when I drive into town I'm gonna kill one of these kids. I have nightmares of some insane MAGA mom and dad trying to kill ME because it was ALL my fault. A family of 4 was killed in a golf cart driving down the main highway that goes through a nearby small town, running a red light awhile back, being struck by a cement truck. The city restricted golf carts to side streets after that (I think they should be restricted to golf courses unless they can do the speed limit personally). I swear, these spoiled little shits are getting taught nothing, 0, by their parents.
I'm starting to sound like my grandpa

the day I saw the kid without a helmet flying by on an e-bike on a busy neighborhood road in the community.

What surprised me was the news that there are so many deaths attached to these bikes. I would think I would have heard about these accidents long before now.

Unfortunately there's no good way to anticipate it.

that I was a minnow swimming with the sharks. Obeying the traffic laws, as visible as possible, never doing anything stupid, I still expected to be run off the road at least once a day. I was even once taken out by a kamikaze coconut bouncing across the road.

Hopefully, these kids will learn that the lure of the road can also come with a bad case of road rash or worse.

Best advice I've ever given.

Where I am, far too many e-bikes/scooters are utilized with reckless abandon. Red light? Fuck you. Stop sign? Not for me. Wrong way in the bike lane? Don't @ me, bro! What do you mean we shouldn't ride in big groups down both lanes of a city street? That's my freedom, boomer. I'm calling my mom!

Now, give these things more power, let them go 30 mph piloted by someone who has been trained since diapers to be distracted by their phone. No training, no lights/visibility, no insurance, no safety gear. And when your tragically entitled crotch goblin crashes into my car at their own fault, and then takes off, I'm on the hook to pay to fix it.

Morgan & Morgan, et al salivates at this sort of shit.

None of this excuses the maniacs who are equally entitled/distracted/stupid idiots piloting tons of aluminum and steel not watching out for pedestrians/bikes/scooters/wheelchairs/etc. They are by far even worse.

Kids zip around the bike paths and roads, and I often see them riding after dark with no lights. It’s just incredibly dangerous for all parties, these sorts of disasters seem inevitable.

Lime Bikes and Scooters are EVERYWHERE in Seattle. You see ding dongs zipping around on them 24/7; in bike lanes, out of bike lanes, through red lights, on sidewalks, riding 2 at a time. No one wears a helmet.

Are they all drunk? Probably not. Are they all high on the Pot? More likely.
