You would need a 250,000 troop invasion of the Iranian side of the Strait

And you'd need to occupy pretty much all of Hormozgan and probably Bushehr provinces with a foothold 20 miles from the shore, minimum. So basically 10s of thousands of square miles and about 3.5 million Iranians.

I've read we could likely get it open with a small amphibious/spec ops force, leveraging big-time air/sea based 'cover', and targeted operation on key strategic points near the Strait itself. But KEEPING it open with a small force is another matter. The forces would be greatly imperiled, longer term if they just hung out, given the Iranians would likely decide to make their lives as miserable and dangerous as possible.

That's just what I've been reading and it seems to make sense, fwiw
