I read the Trump-backed so-called Save America Act (SB 1383) because most of the media and most of our lawmakers apparently have not. Its obvious that they havent read it because if they had, they would sound the alarm about Point 1, below.
The Save America Act:
1. States that all states shall submit their voter registration lists to the Department of Homeland Securitys (DHS)SAVE voter purge program, which reportedly has error rates as high as 14% & relies on data from the Social Security Administration (SSA) whose databases were mishandled by DOGE per:
The SSA itself (in a recent court filing titled Notice of Corrections to the Court Record),
A whistleblower report by the SSAs former Chief Data Officer, and
A new whistleblower report, which alleges that a former DOGE member claimed to have retained his SSA computer & credentials providing God level access to SSA systems.
(The Act mentions giving flagged voters notice and an opportunity to prove citizenship without specifying the form or length of time for the notice and while simultaneously making it very difficult to prove citizenship if flagged or purged. See also FN 1.)
In addition, the Act:
2. Imposes no penalty for erroneous purges, but subjects officials to citizen suits & potential prison time for registering a single voter without correct documentation even if the voter is a citizen. (Note: The GOP has wrongly purged thousands of voters in past elections.

(1,305 posts)The GOP constantly runs ads saying the democrats are against proving who you are to vote. They're against all the BULLSHIT in this bill.
So make their OWN bill requiring what most States already require or accept; Real ID drivers license, State ID, Passport etc. Leave out all the suppressive shit
And then scream it from the mountaintops when Johnson wont allow a vote on it.
90% of voters support a legit voter ID requirement. Give them a Bill that fits what they're talking about.
STOP giving the GOP ad material.
We have to spread the BS in this bill that makes it a fascist takeover of our elections.

(30,022 posts)Just because some Republicans like the way Putin runs elections?
The actual proven cases of voter fraud have been miniscule.
The rest is fascist hot air.

(1,305 posts)Just like the SOTU speech; when trump said "stand up if you agree the duty of the govt is to protect US citizens first". I yelled STAND UP!!!!
Because I KNEW this would become an ad. They sat. And 2 weeks ago I saw the first ad. Looks horrible. And like it or not, commercials like that WORK because so many people dont pay attention to the real news. They worked against Harris very well. That & her not responding to many of them.
DUers need to understand that most people are NOT like people HERE. And thats not condescending. Its fact.
I want to WIN. The country is at stake. Trump's cult MUST be defeated. And if we have to play the political game to WIN then play it we must.

(994 posts)I think any proposal should include making a basic Real ID free to the individual. States can decide how to pay for that, but it could not be a separate fee charged to individuals. The federal government could reimburse states if they so chose.
And there should be a requirement that every citizen be able to obtain these IDs easily. No games like moving the only locations issuing them out to the middle of a deep red area where most inner-city Democrats can't easily get in order to obtain one--or vice versa.
But this still doesn't address vote-by-mail or absentee voting. Those are both more difficult identification issues that require some thought.
We have a myriad of technology-based options at our disposal, and it is inevitable that one day we will vote electronically from wherever we choose with solid multifactor authentication making it a reliable option--but right now we do not--and should not--trust the government with our biometric identities in order to make it happen. That data would be used in many other ways that we would not want.
Democrats need to propose reasonable reforms now, but they also need to be looking towards what the future of voting will be and begin to shape it in ways that are fair to everyone. Otherwise, someone like Elon Musk will eventually be put in charge of it by Republicans--and we DO NOT want that.

As for mail-ins, I think our state now requires you to put your ID number on your sealed ballot envelope inside the mailer envelope.
But as you see from other responses, too many on our side are just willing to cede this to the GOP
First, under the Constitution, voting is under the purview of the states. Do not aid in federalizing voting.
Second, any virtually all voter ID laws are discriminatory against women (and others who have changed their names), the poor (obtaining the documentation needed to get an ID isn't free), elderly and minorities both of whom have higher rates of unrecorded births and or lost documents (personal, church, or governmental).
Third, voting by noon-citizens is not a problem, as established by every scientifically rigorous study on the matter.

(1,305 posts)And yes, those ads WORK.
The votes we NEED see those ads.
And as I said, the VAST majority of ALL voters, D, R, I; support some sort of reasonable ID.
I vote in GA. I've had to show my ID ever since I was 18. It's never NOT been required. And we've had record turnout. EVERYONE has an acceptable ID; you have to have one to get controlled medicine, to do ANYTHING at a bank, to fly, etc. It's NOT that hard & here we are ONCE AGAIN, giving them a commercial.
It's beyond frustrating.

(38,537 posts)Don't impose an unconstitutional federal voting requirement.
You don't have to have one to get controlled medicine. I have received plenty of controlled medication in my life, and aside from the cough medicine which is an ingredient in meth, I've never had to show an ID. Again - this is a state matter, not a federal one. Stop trying to federalize everything.
Not everyone banks or flies - again - discrimination against impoverished individuals, older individuals.
Instead of bemoaning the fact that Democrats are not supporting an unconstitutional measure designed to solve a problem that does not exist, if you are concerned about Democrats voting no, work on messaging about why this measure is unconstitutional, designed to fix a problem that doesn't exist, and is discriminatory.
It is beyond ridiculous that every time this comes up I spend far more time educating Democrats about the discriminatory nature of requiring Voter IDs than I do working against the requirement itself. It should be a given that Democrats oppose federalization of voting and discriminatory identification practices.

(12,511 posts)How any of this would deny Americans their right to vote. Because . . .
The right to vote needs to be defined by the Republican Party if they have any hope of winning, aka cheating.
Here's a suggestion:
Instead of purging voter rolls, the purge should apply to the GOP, an organization that has proven itself to be anti-democracy and UnAmerican.
