Because I was thinking just half an hour or so back about how Trump is mainly known for reality tv, which works by capturing ratings through emotion manipulation. The net is a bit like that too. Not exactly a good fit for serious policy decisions, focused work etc.

(Incidentally, I have sensitive hearing..it is not very fun..)


I first saw this game world/the net seeping into the real world in 2011. It looked like a lousy idea then, it looks worse today as many seem to truly get addled into forgetting the old reality circa 2008 which I will never give up on.
Ffs that was just 18 years ago.
Unlike Winston in 1984, I vividly remember life before this shit, connecting things beyond all sense and reason, destroying health/attention and work..

Ironically I am constantly posting online on what (to me) is mostly the old web taken at face value, to try to send a stop and pullback signal at least locally, before I can wrap up and go offline.

I thought of reality tv because I have been pondering this whole influence thing and how it works when you want to avoid it. It is a very trashy form of entertainment, but it seems to work by the mastery of emotion manipulation. That is all Trump has.

I forget which Shakespearean play it is from “neither a borrower nor a lender be”. But I like to extend that to influence “neither an influencer nor influenced be”.

Because a herd tuned and directed this way or that is scary..I think the planet is overpopulated and not enough resources are being spent on a complex species and a dictystelium fruiting body is not the best thing to emulate.

I saw a DUer mobeau6 once say that an educated populace is the only security against this state of affairs and it struck me. It was in reference to Jan 6 I remember.

DUers have often said things that stayed with me. I remembered them even during the worst years of my life when I was not even on DU.

I see life get cheap where it is over abundant. Our overlords globally are very ugly humans.
