T. Roosevelt had true conservation contributions, Interstate Highways system under Ike, EPA under Dick.

Your list isn't really "conservative," as it were..."conservation" is really a liberal and progressive sort of thing, for it preserves and protects Nature, rather than exploiting and spending it heedlessly...

The Insterstate Highway system - definitely a liberal idea - can you imagine conservatives today allowing such a thing? Interesting side note, Ike got the idea for the highway system while traveling across the country as a youngster in the army...bruised his butt up on all those horse trails evolved into shoddy roads, he did...

And the EPA? Not really a conservative thing, given how conservatives have been trying to dismantle it pretty much since it's inception...

They're even trying to destroy the Post Office. Modern conservatives don't conserve anything. They're all about destruction.

With the modern day conservative take on things, just wanted to highlight where were are today as compared to 100 year ago and 50 years ago.

But I think (was more confident on this a moment ago) I remember reading a speech he gave in which he referenced traveling the terrible back roads in his youth and this experience led to his suggeston for the highway system. Of course, it was a long time ago that I read this, so who knows? I may be totally wrong...

I would put the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and Occupational Safety and Health Act, all signed by Nixon, down as conservative contributions to society...with the proviso that in today's political climate, Nixon would be a moderate Democrat.

Conservatives USED to not be as bad as they are now. Eisenhower built the Interstate Highway System, and he was a conservative for his time. (Today, like Nixon, he'd be a moderate Democrat.) Conservatives would spend money if there was a good reason, they'd regulate if there was a good reason, they would show up and work and they didn't want to destroy the government in order to save it.

The people we have now calling themselves "conservative" are right-wing bomb throwers. Imagine a right-wing version of Saul Alinsky or Bill Ayers, and you know what the people calling themselves "conservative Republicans" are. Imagine a right-wing, and white, version of Huey Newton or Bobby Seale, and you know what a teabagger is.

But these days the bills with good sounding names do pretty much the opposite of what the title implies.

One of the problems we have today is that the conservatives and the liberals are all in one party. The Republicans have transcended such things, becoming instead a party of hate and fear backed by greed.

by things like, say, fighting against civil rights, workers rights, environmental protection, then the net good they've contributed is below zero. Way below.

I read something many years ago that was pretty good...it was a banquet to thank the ten largest contributors to some charity, which I think was a hospital. Anyway, it was a worthwhile community fund and the ten largest contributors gave a shitload of money. At the banquet, each contributor was asked to give a speech honoring the reasons they gave the money. About half of them thanked God, some honored a special person who needed the services of the organization. The last guy got up and thanked the IRS because the room would be empty if you couldn't write off charitable contributions.
