Long COVID article on Sunday's front page of the Los Angeles Times

As a survivor of this life-stealing plague, I often am shocked by the level of ignorance about it

It's gratifying to see it shared more visibly like this was today

Long COVID leaves thousands of L.A. County residents sick, broke and ignored

“You’re not just becoming disabled,” said Elle Seibert, 31, who has dealt with debilitating fatigue and cardiac symptoms since 2020. “You’re realizing how easily society at large and people in your life will abandon you when you cannot offer them things.”

...

The official county count for total confirmed COVID infections ended in mid-2023 at 3.5 million. Given the World Health Organization’s estimate that 6% of infections result in long COVID, just the first two years of the pandemic may have yielded up to 175,000 long COVID cases, a number that has only grown as the virus has continued to circulate.

...

“We still hear stories about people who are saying, you know, my physician dismissed it or misdiagnosed it, or told me to just go home and wait,” Ferrer said.

...

The outlook at the federal level is grim. Last year, the Trump administration closed the Office for Long COVID Research and Practice and canceled grants for long COVID research.
---
“The COVID-19 pandemic is over, and HHS will no longer waste billions of taxpayer dollars responding to a nonexistent pandemic that Americans moved on from years ago,” a Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson told the magazine Science.

“Several factors prompted Iwasaki’s team to zero in on autoimmunity as one of Long COVID’s drivers. First, there was the persistent nature of the condition. “This suggested to us that there is some chronic triggering of an immune response that is pathogenic,” she says.
Second, women between the ages of 30 and 50 are among the most susceptible to Long COVID. Women in this age group also face a greater risk of autoimmune diseases in general. Finally, in earlier research, Iwasaki’s team detected significant levels of autoantibodies in individuals who were infected with SARS-CoV-2. “All of these things were pointing to the possibility of autoimmune responses being one of the triggers of Long COVID,” Iwasaki says.”

“In their latest study, Iwasaki’s team analyzed blood samples from patients in the Mount Sinai-Yale Long COVID study. This cohort of over 215 Long COVID patients is part of a collaboration between Iwasaki and David Putrino, PhD, professor in the Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. As part of this joint effort, Putrino’s clinic obtained blood samples from patients enrolled in the study. Iwasaki’s laboratory then purified antibodies from the blood and transferred them into healthy mice.
Next, the researchers led by Keyla Sá, a postdoctoral fellow in Iwasaki’s lab, conducted multiple behavioral experiments to look for Long COVID symptoms. While many of these experiments found no significant difference between the experimental and control mice, a few revealed striking changes in those that received antibodies.“

I follow Prof Akiko Iwasaki on x - her group at Yale along with Mt Sinai study LC. (Putrino Lab)

“As we begin the New Year 2026, I have great hopes for research to advance our understanding of #PAIS. This requires determination and collaboration across fields, sectors, and society. So grateful to work with many of you to find and eliminate root causes of #LongCOVID #MECFS 🙏🏼

“Calling all New Yorkers! If you have #LongCOVID and would like to be a part of this exciting trial exploring low dose rapamycin as a potential therapy, please reach out to the @CoRESinai team. This trial will deepen our understanding of immune dysfunction in LongCOVID. Plz help!”

fatigue/cognitive disabilities. There are many. The article does mention (mostly in passing), “COVID-19 really has had a profound impact in terms of long-lasting symptoms [b]that affect all kinds of different parts of the body, at a much higher rate than we usually see from other viruses,” Ferrer said.

I have long COVID, although it is mostly only mildly symptomatic these days. I have normal energy and cognitive skills. Mine impacted my GI system. I was left with pancreatitis, some form of gall bladder crud (never fully diagnosed), and gut dysbiosis. What is lingering is the gut dysbiosis. I spent the power outage on Friday hanging out in Panera, then McDonald's after Panera closed, because my gut was having a bad day - and I didn't need to fill a toilet at home with crap (literally) I couldn't flush because our water system is tied to our electricity.

I am lucky, in that my lingering symptoms (4 years after my initial infection) are relatively mild. I've started brewing kombucha again - as long as I chug 16 oz every 3 days or so it stays under control. I am unlucky, in that my form of long COVID is studied even less than the fatigue/cognitive disability type.

And taking testosterone therapy were getting better from LC. She said many women with LC had low testosterone levels - they believe Covid can disrupt hormone levels. She said more studies need to be done but getting hormone levels checked by a Dr could help. She said low testosterone in women can cause inflammation, fatigue, muscle pain, arthritis, memory problems and can reactivate latent viruses.

Besides Kimbucha which I also make, I have homemade sauerkraut with most meals. Little sips of the sauerkraut juice also have tons of probiotics. It’s so easy and so healthy- shred cabbage and cover it with salt water - leave out on counter for a week and then refrigerate it. I need to have something acid with my food for digestion. Also helpful is a slice of pineapple with each meal.

We're you able to follow the dietary changes they suggest?
I had COVID once and I feel very lucky. My daughter has a friend in her 40's who has had Covid 4 or 5 times and she has had heart issues. I worry about her. She is now a single mom who is trying to pay mortgage and raise 2 teen girls. She always has at least 2 jobs. So, no time to do anything good for herself, like sleep and a healthy diet. She eats junk food and is always on the run.
I hope someday we get the NIH up and running again. Good luck with your continued recovery.

through the onset of and coping with disabling conditions know the frustrations of being ignored/misdiagnosed, losing jobs, slipping down financially and the hurt of watching family and friends put us on the "ignore" list so to speak.

There is perhaps no greater hurt than not being invited for Thanksgiving and Christmas by your family because they don't believe you about your condition and don't want you around. I spent so many like that.
