Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was roasted online after Meta announced they'll be shutting down Horizon Worlds, part of their virtual reality "Metaverse," this summer after spending close to $80 billion on the project.
The news comes five years after Zuckerberg declared the metaverse to be the future of Facebook, even renaming the company Meta to reflect that vision. In recent months, Meta cut roughly 10% of the workforce in its "metaverse" division and signaled a shift away from virtual reality for its flagship platform, Horizon Worlds, where users interact through avatars.
Earlier this week, the company announced that access to the immersive world via VR headsets would end on June 15. A day later, Meta partially reversed course, saying it would continue supporting some existing VR apps within Horizon Worlds but would stop developing new ones.
Taken together, the moves mark a significant retreat from Zuckerbergs original vision of a fully immersive, VR-driven metaverseeffectively signaling the end of that initial concept.

(41,410 posts)I don't think Mark Zuckerberg is that stupid. He had to realize that virtual reality will only appeal to a very small percentage of the market ... ever. I don't care how good or well-crafted it is, it's not the "future" of anything except a certain type of gaming for a small group who can afford the hobby.
There's no way that $80 billion could be blown on this tiny VR market in five years. He was using the money for some other goal ... maybe secret offshore investments? ... private PAC donations? ... I don't know. Eighty billion dollars doesn't disappear that quickly and he had to have known where it was going.

Big tech is creating products no one wants or needs. No one wants to pay a premium price for an AI refrigerator or an AI toaster. No one wants to deal with an AI avatar rather than a real person.
