I would point out that many people who have known Maher from the beginning have said he is always "playing the role" for what he thinks benefits him. So when people saw the "young" Maher they were seeing an act and now when they see the way he is now they may well be seeing an act once again. With his "libertarian" BS he finds it comfortable to have moved more right and he can "sell" that act as well.
This is the guy who gave white supremacists a platform over and over and legitimized their BS as being just an ""opposing viewpoint". Look at his statement on its' face that every horrible thing in the Middle East over the last 50 years can be traced to Iran. So he completely negates condemnation for the conduct of Israel in Gaza and the West Bank at any time over the last 50 years. He negates the conduct of Saudi Arabia. All by his sweeping statement that "every" horrible thing has been the responsibility of Iran. So since he didn't include anything else that has happened then by the definition in his statement they weren't horrible.
Maher is a phony selling an act to line his pockets. The act changes as he sees the wind blow money that he might grab by grabbing attention or viewers.
