CNNs Harry Enten highlighted Senator John Fettermans (D-PA) staggering polling collapse among Pennsylvania Democrats on Friday morning.
John Fetterman is doing as well with Pennsylvania Democrats as the New York Giants are as liked in the state of Pennsylvania, or the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I mean, just look at this. Among Pennsylvania Democrats and that approval of Fetterman, back in 2023, he was a Democrat liberal darling. He was at plus 68 points. Look at how low he has fallen down to negative 40 points! Hes down there with the Titanic among Democrats in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania! marveled Enten at the outset of a segment with anchor John Berman. And you know, to put a comparison point on it, you know we always talk about how Chuck Schumer is not well-liked by the Democratic base nationwide. Chuck Schumer has a net popularity rating of about minus two points. He is 38 points more popular than John Fetterman is with Pennsylvania Democrats. And I was also looking at Kyrsten Sinema, who of course ended up leaving the Democratic Party in Arizona. She was considerably more popular just before she shifted over than John Fetterman is at minus 40 points.
Is this a 108-point swing? inquired Berman.
This is a 108-point swing! confirmed Enten.

(27,625 posts)Leaving out undecideds, a 68-point margin works out to 84-16. A negative 40-point margin comes to 30-70. That means he's dropped 54 points. Using the notion of a "swing" is a trick to make the result seem more dramatic...but it's as meaningless at Trump claiming he'll drop medication costs by 400%.

(627 posts)But its not as meaningless as Trumps claim as math is still involved. Its just presented in a nonstandard but equally understandable manner. If the fed was expected to raise its key interest rate 25 points but instead lowered it by 25 points, that is a 25 point difference. His net approval rating by democrats has fallen by over 100 points by this measure, although I agree your method is what we usually mean by change in approval ratings.

(23,696 posts)these statements drive me nuts.
also drives me nuts when they say someone who has 30% approval and 70% disapproval is "40 points underwater". No, you are 20 points underwater, because that is percentage of people you need to flip to get back to majority 50% approval. (okay technically 50% + 1 more person, but you know what i mean). If you increased your approval percentage by 40 points you would be at 70% approval and 30% disapproval. which is WAY more than you need to be "above water".
(net approval is -40%, and distance to majority is 20%). it is correct that net approval shows "how many more people don't like you", so 40%, but distance to majority accounts for the fact that someone who goes disapproving to approving is causing a swing in BOTH metrics at the same time.
