(96 posts)...out in the "rural" areas in OHIO more and more "businesses" are switching to cash. Plumbers, electricians, landscapers, restaurants.... cash, cash, cash. Wanna' pay with credit card? In many cases you simply aren't allowed that option. If they accept credit you pay the tacked on credit processing percentage of 2-4%.
Residential customers: It is best practice to have the independent contractor plumber (electrician etc.) fill out a W-9 before paying them to secure their Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) if you expect the work to go over $600. Otherwise, no trace of cash, check, or payment received, no reporting of income to IRS. Many of these people do not even have business licenses. If you ask the repair person to fill out the form, good luck getting your repair done. They will just laugh and walk away. Good luck finding another repair person. Corruption as far and wide as the eye can see. Ohio GOP just shrugs. Consumer rights go right out the window. Take them to court when disputes arise, absolutely satisfying as you will likely win, but that takes time and more money.
