(23,768 posts)There had been a series of terrorist attacks throughout France. Armed military police at all major roads and guarding the US Embassy.

(6,064 posts)She yelled "Run" and bolted. We followed her, not knowing what was happening. It turned out to be a drill. I've been there in the 80's, 90's and 2000's. The heavily armed police were always there. Once making me take a long walk around to an airline window instead of a direct line. I've been stopped from taking a photo at the Arc de Triomphe. I witnessed, what I presumed to be undercover police, grab a pedestrian and take him away in an unmarked car. No one took much notice. I did feel safe in France, but all the automatic weapons was an experience I didn't have in the Navy.

(38,575 posts)All three of us in my family opt out of millimeter wave screenings. (Once is strictly medically necessary - millimeter wave technology can destroy the functionality of CGMs; the other two are out of an abundance of caution because both of us undergo an extraordinary amount of medical imaging and are at high risk for a half dozen or so cancers. In theory there is no risk - but that's what they told my grandparents when my mother started getting annual chest X-ray rays as a child. We didn't know what we didn't know until it's to late to undo it.). That means each and every time we fly we get an invasive pat down.
My first thought when Trump said he was sending ICE to airports was that they might be used for pat downs. That might be enough to get me to skip the pat down.

I recently saw - for the first time - a sign on a grocery store door that said ''ICE NOT WELCOME HERE without a warrant'. It's a start.
