SAVE America Act author admits married aide 'had to go through a bunch of hoops' to vote

March 24, 2026

Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), a leading champion of the SAVE America Act in Congress, acknowledged that the legislation could pose hurdles for married women and others who have changed their legal name, according to a video obtained by the independent media organization Call to Activism.

As an example of potential hindrances, the representative noted that his chief of staff encountered difficulties obtaining a new identification card after Virginia adopted the REAL ID system.

“So, she had to go through a bunch of hoops. She’s gonna have to go back to the DMV twice because they want the paperwork,” Roy said. “That’s just part of the issue with how we try to set up the ability to identify people.”

Though he had just highlighted a potential hurdle that married women may face when they register to vote, Roy claimed that “there’s no barriers at all to married women being able to vote” with the SAVE America Act.

“Perhaps the most absurd narrative peddled from the left, including twice-failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, is that the SAVE Act will somehow disenfranchise married women, or anyone else who has changed his or her name, from voting in federal elections,” Roy wrote in an April 2025 press release.

Here's a letter to the editor I had published.

SAVE America FROM VOTING Act

The SAVE Act (S. 128), currently stalled in the Senate, should be called
"Save America FROM Voting Act, because it is an ideal VOTER
SUPPRESSION bill.
As well, it is a solution in search of a problem. Election boards already have checks to keep ineligibles from voting and it is already illegal for noncitizens to vote (and they would be deported immediately).

The bill requires voters to show proof of US citizenship, such as a passport
or Certified Birth Certificate, to register to vote. “Approximately 146 million
American citizens do not possess a valid passport—for context, 153
million Americans voted in the 2024 presidential general election,”
according to the Center for American Progress.

Real IDs won’t work because they don’t include your place of birth.
Student IDs are not eligible and they are removing polling places from
campuses.

It would be a POLL TAX, which is prohibited in the 24th Amendment to the
Constitution.
It would hit married WOMEN the hardest because, if they take their
husband’s name, it would no longer match the name on their birth
certificate.
It is expensive to renew your passport: $130 (Book), $30 (Card)= $160. A
new "Certified Birth Certificate would cost between $10-60. Total cost for
both could be as high as $220.

With the strong Democratic wave forming, November’s election could turn
both Houses of Congress. Republicans and their corrupt leader are terrified
of this outcome because Democrats could reverse Project 2025’s
devastating policies that aim to turn America into a theocracy and take us
back to the Dark Ages.

It's an ideal way to purge poor people, young people and women to ensure
a Republican victory. Republicans have already pushed through major policies that Americans are strongly against. With true and fair elections,
Republicans can’t win and that is why they cheat instead of changing their
policies to reflect America.
If this becomes law, it could go into effect immediately, causing a mad
dash to the DMV. And, then, would the government be able to get our new
IDs to us in time to Re-register, let alone to vote in NOV? I remember trying
to simply renew my drivers license last year, The DMV was mobbed and it
took me days of standing in long lines to finally take my test.

The other bill S.3752, called SAVE America Act voter ID-bill is even more
restrictive.
Please familiarize yourselves with both of these complicated bills and tell
your Senators to STOP The SAVE Act.
