Jeffrey Goldberg and Joe Weisenthal: Pandora's Box Has Been Opened #Bulwark

A war of choice may evolve into a war of necessity because the brains at the White House apparently did not anticipate that Iran—in response to the bombing campaign—would shut down the Strait of Hormuz, which the global economy depends on being open. It's also not a good look for the U.S. to be got by a power like Iran because China is watching. Plus, how the war is impacting the supply chain, the markets may be underpricing oil because traders keep banking on Trump to do his usual TACO, and Israel acting like an illiberal Middle Eastern regime is creating a disconnect with American Jews.

The Atlantic’s Jeff Goldberg and Bloomberg’s Joe Weisenthal join Tim Miller.

Pandora's Box.

In Hesiod’s Works and Days, Pandora had a jar containing all manner of misery and evil. Zeus sent her to Epimetheus, who forgot the warning of his brother Prometheus and made Pandora his wife. She afterward opened the jar, from which the evils flew out over the earth. Hope alone remained inside, the lid having been shut down before she could escape. In a later story the jar contained not evils but blessings, which would have been preserved for the human race had they not been lost
through the opening of the jar out of curiosity.

the brains at the White House apparently did not anticipate that Iran—in response to the bombing campaign—would shut down the Strait of Hormuz, which the global economy depends on being open.

In my eyes, it wasn't so much the "brains at the White House" as much as it was "the brains" (or lack thereof) of Jared Kushner. It's universal knowledge that Trump is a lazy ass, especially when it comes to thinking. He delegated the Iran situation to Jared. And first, Jared is no brain. The administration, teachers, and fellow students at his yeshiva were amazed that he got into Harvard -- until they learned about his father's massive donation to the institution. Second, Kushner, his family, and Netanyahu are old, old friends. Bibi would sleep in Jared's bedroom when he came to visit the U.S. Third, while I'm certain all branches of the Pentagon warned Trump about the Strait of Hormuz, it came down to Trump to Jared, with him asking "What do you think, Jared?" And Jared breezily responded, "Shouldn't be a problem." "You sure?" "Oh yeah. Just go ahead." (And Jared had asked Bibi about The Strait and the latter didn't want to discourage Trump and lied, and told Jared, "No problem," knowing that Trump would not make an independent choice.

So yeah, "the White House" relied on poor information and is responsible for where we are now.
