The police in London have arrested two men accused of setting fire to ambulances operated by a Jewish volunteer service, in one of several attacks in Europe claimed by a previously unknown Islamist group.
The men, aged 45 and 47, were detained on Wednesday morning at two homes in northwest London, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement. They are accused of arson with intent to endanger life, which has a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Their names were not released, in keeping with privacy rules that govern communications by the British police.
The police had said they were looking for three suspects in connection with the fire, which started around 1.30 a.m. on Monday. Oxygen canisters inside the ambulances exploded in the blaze, destroying three vehicles and smashing the windows of nearby homes. Nobody was injured in the attack.

The group, calling itself Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiyya, has also claimed responsibility for a series of fires and explosions in Europe that started on March 9 and have struck synagogues, Jewish schools and an American bank. None of the attacks have caused injuries but they have created fear and distress amid rising antisemitism.

(1,764 posts)Horrible that this was their idea of a thing to do. What sort of clowns think destroying ambulances is a good idea? Hatred is usually a pretty stupid thing.

Hopefully they will soon catch the third arsonist and any others involved

(56,104 posts)"Oh, but Israel..." their quick, "hey look over there!" and they are ALWAYS the same people who screech, "Don't make criticism about Israel about the Jews". It is commonly known as "projection." They blame anti-Semitism on Israel, which is anti-Semitic, in of itself. "Israel" is simply an excuse for anti-Semites. It is akin to blaming Black-on-Black violence on rap. It is nothing more than the majority population trying to blame bigotry against a minority population on the affected minority!
Given this formula, should we start blaming the rise of Islamophobia on Hamas? Hisb'allah? Iran? Syria?

(22,662 posts)Criticism of Israeli government and actions is not antisemitic (often true), always bring up Israel when there is an antisemitic crime somewhere other than Israel.
It seems to be double think, Israel does not mean Jews but Jews means Israel.

(4,239 posts)Simply pointing out the direct correlation - cause and effect - is neither "double think" nor anti-semitism. It's free speech, just as legitimate criticism of Israel is. Also a call to help reign in Israel because it surely has gone off the rails beyond civilized conduct. As a result, both innocent Muslims and innocent Jews are getting hurt. Even the most ardent of Israel's supporters must see that?!
You may not like the message, but shooting the messenger is usually not very productive.
But just for comparison, do you think Israel is guilty of Islamophobia or racism for punishing and dispossessing everyone in Gaza and killing tens of thousands of women and children for the sins of a few thousand Hamas and civilians on October 7th that they had no knowledge of or part in? Because that's what Israel did, there is no denying that any further. It was TERRORISM and murder by a state against a defenseless people and resulted from the dehumanization of Palestinians.
Further, do you think the Muslims who resort to their own, cruder form of terrorism because they can't get back at mighty Israel directly - might look at that and say "what's good for the goose...." Because hurting Jews anywhere hurts Israel and they know it. That warped thinking is similar to what Israel did to Gazans. Is it conflation or is it a parallel dehumanization? And who is really guilty of conflation of Jews and Israel - the very STATE of Israel, since its founding! So please talk to the people there about "double speak" - it's a Jews-only state, a Jewish homeland! But you can't conflate! - and the rise in violence against Jews worldwide and why it is really happening. It's not anti-semitism. It's retribution and it was foretold and warned about, over and over.
I don't want to see anyone hurt. We are all equal and all lives matter equally. I have trust that most people here feel that way and why I have criticized Israel for its actions and continue to do so now. And now I condemn all senseless acts of violence against innocent Jews worldwide. But I will continue to point out why it is happening, because Israel must be stopped from committing more crimes. Just look at the West Bank murders or the ethnic cleansing and likely occupation/annexation of south Lebanon. Not to mention the unprovoked devastation of Iran for nothing more than obvious geo-political gain. Ugh.

(22,662 posts)if so, I strongly disagree.
My point was that when an Islamic group or country does something, we immediately hear they do not represent all Muslims and we would condemn any Islamophobic actions.
However when Israel does something and Jews are attacked we hear such an attack is wrong (usually but not very loudly) but then the attack is immediately blamed on Israel's actions and it is said what did "they" expect.
Antisemitic attacks are not 'holding Israel accountable', it is attacking innocent, uninvolved people.
I have spoken against the actions in Gaza that I believed were excessive in the past so do not need to repeat them here. Also since the first day of the attack on Iran I have condemned the actions of the US and Israel. This war is completely unjustified.

Perhaps this might explain:
The Rafah Paramedic Massacre,
From wiki:
According to forensic analyst Ahmad Dhaher who examined five of the bodies, the aid workers were killed at close-range in execution-style killings, with "specific and intentional" bullet wounds in heads and hearts.[12] Relatives of the victims described various signs of abuse. One relative noted marks on a victim's wrists from restraint and broken fingers, while another mentioned multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and wrist. Two witnesses also reported that some victims had their hands or feet bound.[13]
A video recording discovered on a cellphone of one of the medics contradicts Israel's narrative of the incident, showing the ambulances and fire truck clearly marked with their emergency lights on as Israeli troops hit them with a barrage of gunfire, killing all the medics. In the video, a paramedic recited the Shahada, and added, "Forgive me, Mom, forgive me. I swear I only chose this path to help others." The paramedic was later found in the mass grave with a bullet in his head. The New York Times analyzed satellite imagery that showed Israeli forces bulldozing the site after the attack.[14][15] Following the release of the video recording, Israel changed its account of the incident, admitting that its soldiers have "made mistakes."[16]
So what should be the punishment for those responsible for the Rafah Paramedic Massacre? Or the hundreds of ambulances bombed and shelled, not empty but with medics and patients inside? Like the ambulance that was ambushed and two paramedics incinerated while trying to rescue Hind Rajab, the 5-year old girl trapped in her car and also killed? Anything at all?
Yes, throw these two in jail!! But throw the ones responsible for those atrocities in Gaza in jail too!! No more impunity to commit murder of Arabs/Muslims.
Have people still not made the connection and understood that accountability is necessary for the cycle to end?
