Phoenix school teacher dies during arrest attempt in teen sex abuse case

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Phoenix police were closing in on a high school teacher accused of abusing a teenage girl this week when he took his own life, investigators announced Thursday.

Police said the investigation started Monday when a woman called them and said that when she was 16, she had a sexual relationship with Shadow Mountain High School teacher Steven Charles Mitten, 65, that lasted roughly three years.

Officers said they gathered enough evidence to arrest him. On Wednesday, about 4:30 p.m., Fugitive Apprehension and Investigations Detail detectives found Mitten in his car.

They used a Grappler to stop Mitten’s car and tried to take him into custody. Police say Mitten refused officers’ commands and eventually pulled out a gun and shot himself.
