WASHINGTON -- While congratulating the Boston Bruins on their 2011 Stanley Cup championship, President Barack Obama did the obligatory spotlighting of key players in that run. Zdeno Chara got the height joke. Brad Marchand was chided for being the "Little Ball of Hate." Tim Thomas was celebrated for being only the second American player to win playoff MVP, having posted two shutouts in the Final.
Chara smiled. Marchand blushed.
Thomas wasn't there to hear it.
Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli confirmed that Thomas had told him months ago he would not attend the White House event due to his political and ideological differences with the Obama administration. Chiarelli said he had tried to convince Thomas to attend the event "over the last couple months" to no avail.
"He chose not to come. The reasons behind it I think he'll make the media aware through his Facebook," said Chiarelli.

Way to go, Timmy! There are already wingnut racist idiots "promoting" hockey as "the last white man's sport." Thanks a fucking LOT for making fans of the sport look like rednecked morons!

(4,113 posts)If that's the case, why doesn't Thomas just stamp big bold letters spelling "IDIOT" across his forehead?
If you're that proud of snubbing the President (regardless of party) and come right out and say you're a Beck fan to the point where you put your political beliefs ahead of being a part of a team, then you might as well flaunt it.
Apparently, Mr. Thomas has taken one too many slap shots to the forehead. Anyone who comes out and announces he's a Beck fan can't be too bright.

(32,086 posts)The same goes for Dan Hampton of the 1985 Chicago Bears, who did the same thing. All it does is make them look petty.

(77 posts)This guy can do WTF he wants. That's his right. But to give a statement like he did declaring his opposition to 'big guvmmt', 'overspending', 'taxation', and blather Luke that is a huge lie and pitiful cover for what is his real thinking. Dude. You need to own it. If you are too cowardly to openly state your disdain for the MAN (besides the Office of POTUS), then you just keep on slapping that lil black disk around Tje rink and yell LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME and the adults will pat you on the head and send you on your 2nd grade way

(94,602 posts)...that politicians shouldn't do meetings with with winning sports teams. It's fundamentally a photo-op for both sides; if someone doesn't agree with the politics of the other side, whatever those politics are, they shouldn't be in the same room together for a picture.

(8,556 posts)It benefits both the team and the president. The president gets to be associated with people who have lots of diehard fans (plenty of whom are far more loyal to their team than to any politician) and the team gets a photo with the most powerful person in the country.

(9,464 posts)If I were part of a team being honored at the WH, I would go no matter who was president. Even if it was someone I couldn't stand, like Dubya. I'm suprised Thomas can stand being a member of a team in such a blue state as MA.

It is a call from the CIC take it and respond if you have to be there in person... then do it.
It is respect for the office and ...Bill Oliely can't understand that. Only he does when it is a Republican.
Strange about that... ..Nah not really.
