3. $100m planes lost because they had to be left behind have the same value as a $1b moon

lander. Just metal, fiber, electronics, etc. The cost is in the design, engineering and production of amortizing so much resources and research over a small number plus the big profit for the company. I saw the waste when I did R&D while in the service but it's a tough choice to spend a lot extra to get something now vs later or pay two companies to design something never done before in the hope that one will succeed. But military waste is as much the government "fault" as it is the contractor's.
The Ukrainians have shown how fast drone technology can change in months obsoleting everything bought yesterday.
Of course, the war is stupid, wasteful and illegal run by idiots and maniacs but the loss of two piles of junk metal to save one pilot is worth far more than anything. Unlike Russia which abandons wounded and uses soldiers as fodder, Ukraine and the United States both treat their soldiers as important and every service person has the confidence that their comrades will go to almost any extent to save their lives even if it's their stupid leaders who put them in unnecessary danger in the first place.
