WASHINGTON Tax cuts are becoming the hottest new idea in Democratic politics from coast to coast, as candidates across the party spectrum seek to capitalize on cost-of-living struggles and win back working-class voters.
Sens. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., recently rolled out sweeping tax cut plans. Booker seeks to create a federal tax exemption for up to $75,000 in income for married couples. Van Hollen wants to set that figure at $92,000. Both have been floated as potential 2028 presidential candidates.
In California, progressive candidate for governor Katie Porter, a former Democratic congresswoman, is proposing to wipe out state income taxes for California families making up to $100,000 per year.
In Georgia, gubernatorial candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms, a former mayor of Atlanta and Biden administration official, is campaigning on eliminating state income taxes for teachers.

(6,068 posts)Santa of government services to serve people has been traditional.
Santa of tax cuts is the other, served up by Republicans-- with Reagan starting the trend.
The idea apparently was developed by Republican strategist Wanniski in the 70's, but promoting tax cuts clearly has helped Republicans.
Democrats having both will get votes, but does raise the problem of deficits and debt. Not sure there is an easy solution to that, but winning elections needs to happen more often and tax policy can be progressive-- for example raise taxes on the rich and cut them on the middle class.
When we have an unprecedented national debt, we all think a tax cut is just what we need. Crazy stuff.

(13,303 posts)Filing single when your income is the same is a real killer.
And they should do more to help single people, a lot of people are not marrying and really getting hit especially as they come closer to middle class. My daughter is thinking of marrying her boyfriend for tax reasons, they have been together for years, but he has no job after first few years and major Trumper with racist beliefs. She keeps making excuses for him and promised me prenup if they marry.
