(81,000 posts)Hungarys turnout is BRUTAL: 37.98% by 11am (2022: 22.77%), pointing to 7580% or more overall. In such a scenario, Orbáns chances look slim, and its unlikely any party beyond Fidesz and Péter Magyars Tisza clears the 5% threshold.

(81,000 posts)One effect of the high early turnout could be felt much later tonight.
If voters are still queuing when polling stations are due to close at 19:00, those stations must stay open until the last person has cast their ballot.
Under the rules set by the National Election Office of Hungary, no results can be published until every polling station in the country has closed. The idea is that partial results should not influence voters who are still waiting to vote.
In practice, it means that even a handful of polling stations staying open late can hold up the entire national result.
So if turnout remains high through the day, the story tonight may not just be who wins, but how long it takes before we know.

Since Hungary is a NATO member I don't think Putin can physical do it himself.

A boarding pass to Moscow. That is how some young citizens greeted Viktor Orbán at the polling station todayon a day marked by record turnout that bodes well. When leaders stray from European values, people respond. Clearly, peacefully, and creatively. Europe is not just about institutions: it is about citizens who take action and defend democracy.

Hungarys Fall from Democracy 📉🇭🇺
After the end of the communist state in 1989, Hungary experienced decades of stable and high democratic quality. However, following the return of Fidesz to power in 2010, the country has seen a steady and significant democratic decline.
Once considered a strong liberal democracy, Hungary is now classified as an electoral autocracy, the only one in the EU.
📊 What is the LDI?
The Liberal Democracy Index measures the rule of law, checks and balances, and civil liberties, along with whether elections were free and fair as well as the prevalence of a free and independent media.
🔍 A closer look by period:
🏛️ 19491989: Communist rule
Hungary remained at very low democratic levels, with no competitive elections or political freedoms.
🗳️ 19892010: Democratic consolidation
Following the transition, Hungary rapidly became a liberal democracy, stabilizing around ~0.75, one of the strongest democratic performances in the region.
📉 20102015: Turning point
After 2010, LDI dropped sharply, marking the beginning of systemic institutional decline.
⚠️ 20152025: Continued erosion
Hungarys LDI has fallen further to 0.32, reflecting weakened checks and balances, reduced media freedom, and concentration of power.
❓ 2026 - Future: A Democratic Resurgence?
Hungary goes to the polls today, an election that could either mark the beginning of democratic recovery or continue the countrys trajectory toward deeper authoritarianism.
Hungarys trajectory highlights how democratic systems can erode gradually, not through a single event, but through sustained institutional change over time.
