Westminster introduces 6 new breeds to competition

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/feedarticle/10057562

Entlebucher

Associated Press= LOS ANGELES (AP) — Six dogs will make history this year as the newest breeds eligible to compete at Westminster. If they have visions of winning, though, history is against them.

The names of some of these rookie breeds competing in this year's Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on Feb. 13-14 at Madison Square Garden are a mouthful: the Entlebucher (ent-lee-BOO'-kehr) mountain dog, the Norwegian Lundehund (LUHN'-dee-hund), the American English coonhound, the Finnish Lapphund (LAP'-hundh), the Cesky (CHESS'-key) terrier and the Xoloitzcuintli (show-low-itz-QUINT'-lee), previously known as the Mexican Hairless.

The six new breeds bring to 185 the number that will compete this year for the best of show grand prize in the annual contest, the oldest sporting event in the United States next to the Kentucky Derby, said David Frei, the club's director of communications and the USA Network show host.

In 1990, there were 142 eligible breeds.

They've long been denied due to pressure from other Akita breeders.

Are you saying American Akitas can compete in the American shows, but Japanese bred Akitas cannot?

He passed away at almost 15 last month. One of the best dogs I have ever had the pleasure to live with.

My guy was black brown and white and had beautiful eyes. We had pet rabbits and cats come to live here and he accepted them all. He was as sweet as can be.

I have a wonderful Border Collie/Chow/Cattle Dog mix who is 12 and the best dog I've ever had. I don't like the problems inbreeding causes in dogs.
