General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI think George Conway KNOWS we're not going to pick up 22 Senate seats in the Midterms, so WHY is he DOING THIS?
SURE...I'd fucking LOVE to see Grampy impeached in the House and then CONVICTED AND REMOVED in the SENATE.For that to happen..assuming Senate Republicans wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole...we'd need TWENTY TWO MORE SEATS.
I do not believe Conway is "ignorant."
I also question why HE THINKS that REPUBLICANS give a FLYING FUCK about "the soul of this country, democracy, the constitution, and the rule of law."
WHO THE FUCK is he ADDRESSING these comments to? DEMOCRATS, who don't have the votes to convict and remove, or REPUBLICANS, who will never CONSIDER IT (at least in sufficient numbers to make it happen)?
Can someone explain George's motivation and intention to me? Is he trying to "shame" Republicans? Because I think we know that after 17 months of fellating Trump, they are BEYOND "shame."

"The question of whether or not Congress should impeach and remove the president isn't a question for polling. It's not a question for political consultants. ... This is a battle for the soul of the country, a battle for its democracy, a battle for its constitution and a battle for the rule of law."

(24,230 posts)He said it about a month ago.
He said they will come to see removal as the only way to avoid a total bloodbath in November.
Take that for what its worth.
Reminder: Conway is currently running for Congress, as a Democrat.

(24,632 posts)Then again, I'm sure that if Republicans saw what they believed to be a "SAFE escape hatch," and could "re-brand" themselves as their beloved, mythical "Reagan Republicans," they MIGHT go for it.
On May 31, 2026, I am just not seeing it. At all.
Fiendish Thingy
(24,230 posts)It would take almost half the Republicans in the senate to vote to convict and remove, and thats too high a bar.
I do think that we could see enough republicans obstructing him on legislation and nominees for the rest of the year.

(827 posts)His Republican brothers and sisters to vote Democratic

(82,714 posts)Which is the correct way to look at current events.
It has gone way beyond politics to good vs evil.
Moral vs immoral.
It is a battle for democracy, rule of law, US constitution.
He is correct.

(24,632 posts)And I am really, really jaded when it comes to the 90,000,000 voters who sat out 2024.
I don't question a single word he said. I believe it's all true.
But who's the audience?
I think American voters...at least that 90 million...are more concerned with guessing this week's "Masked Singer" before they're unmasked.
I think we have all had one or more friends / family members who let us down or dropped the ball.
So we give them another chance, but we hold our breath as we know history could repeat itself.
George isn't going to motivate me any more than I'm already motivated.
I'm just not convinced that everything you laid out...100% true, 100% accurate..matters to the people who sat on their ass and let this happen, because they were either too lazy, too apathetic, or just decided their votes wouldn't matter.
Sure, Trump's tariffs and the war have hurt EVERYONE.
I'm just not seeing irrefutable evidence that this is translating into people motivated in record numbers to vote Republicans out of office.
The "soul of America" isn't hard benefit to low-information voters. And informed voters don't need a pep talk. They can't WAIT to vote.

(82,714 posts)So he is reframing it away from politics.
I think he is going for independents and the disengaged.
You don't waste time and energy during a campaign on those who are firmly in one
camp or the other.
He is not talking to Dems or MAGAs.
He doesn't need to talk to you or me at all.
I assume he has done some focus groups and this morality issue tested well.
Miles Archer
(24,632 posts)And, you're right. The MAGAts were primed and ready to vote for Trump during Biden's entire 4 years.
I've been ready to vote in the Midterms since election night, 2024.
So it's everyone else, and yeah, George is smart enough to read the room before addressing the people who have assembled.
Irish_Dem
(82,714 posts)Where and how you spend your money.
He would be wasting his money talking to you or me.
Or MAGAs.
Though perhaps some of his research indicates he needs to shore up Dems
who are not sure about voting for GOP guy. IDK what his research found along these lines.
You go where there are votes to harvest.
This is determined by polling research.
And the strategy is determined by focus group research.
Yes George is a smart cookie.
And well connected.
I would guess he does his homework and makes good decisions.
We shall see how his campaign progresses.
