Workers dumping hydrogen peroxide into the Reflecting Pool this morning

Gonna need more bottles, don't they know that the pool is the tallest building in the world?

(77,563 posts)Microbial life can be killed with 5ppm of active hydrogen peroxide.
That's 1 part in 600 of the stuff we can buy at the pharmacy.
Plus, H2O2 decomposes rapidly on exposure to sunlight (uV) so it won't be around for more than a day or two.
The waterfowl will be unaffected.
Still doesn't erase the mistakes in how this paint job was vetted & planned.
But, the birdies will be ok.

(115,043 posts)That pool contains approximately 6,750,000 gallons of water. 50 ppm is necessary to even temporarily kill that algae-- and when I say temporarily the blue paint is absorbing so damned much more light and heat that it would be temporary at best before the algae comes roaring back. Still, a first attempt comes out to about 8000 liters of 12% H2O2.
No, 50 ppm will not kill the water fowl--as it is routinely used to disinfect for poultry, but neither will it be anything but a temporary solution to the algae problem. Not to mention there is no damned way a few gallons-- of whatever concentration they are pouring in-- is going to do anything.

(77,563 posts)That and copper sulfate are used as shock treatments.
Slow chlorine releasing compounds like dialkyl benzylkonium chlorides are used as long term control.
Regularly used in things like cooling towers, swimming pools, & settling ponds.
It's actually better than peroxide & chlorine because it stay at an efficacious concentration for much longer.
We do agree that a few gallons, even if something like Tysul 50 is used, isn't enough for that volume of water.

(29,982 posts)They just need to spend a grand or two on a pump to generate enough ozone to kill the algae and bacteria, while remaining safe to drink. Just one ozone pump will clear a small lake in a few days. But this administration are the fuckups who can't shoot straight.

(388 posts)So emblematic of all his failures. He may yet try to convince people that algae is good for you and he intended to raise it in the Reflecting Pool for a new source of nutraceuticals he will sell the rubes as a cure for dementia called Green Maga Miracle at a recurring subscription cost of only $99.99. And hydrogen peroxide will do nothing but harm the wildlife.

Darker surfaces absorb more sunlight and heat than lighter ones, which in shallow water can raise temperatures and increase the energy available for algae growthpotentially accelerating reproduction rates.
Lowe said this effect could be significant, as darker surfaces effectively act as a heat source. "The darker an object the more light it absorbs and the warmer it gets," he said, adding that this can create "perfect conditions for algae to bloom" in shallow, sunlit water.

Besides, the reflecting pool contains 6.75 million gallons of water. A few bottles of hydrogen peroxide will have zero effect on the algae.

(12,825 posts)For the Parks Service said, that the algae grows in the dark underground pipes, then that shock treatment is not going to work.
I wonder if a salt treatment would work?

(4,313 posts). . . the algae is from the pipes left over from Biden and Obama. But the pipes have been running for over a week now, algae in the pipes is long since flushed out.
Can you imagine what the Pool will smell like with all the H2O2 they are dumping in?

(11,329 posts)I cordially invite all MAGA cretins to cease injecting Ivermectin and Bleach and instead to begin drinking copious amounts of Hydrogen Peroxide. I have no medical degree, no legal basis to make prescriptions or offer diagnoses , but I HAVE HEARD IT SAID that this is the best thing to do for yourself. Be sure to get the high quality hydrogen peroxide though, you don't want any of the stuff that has broken down into water and H+ (i.e. - acidified water - note: calm down, this is satire, not actual science, I KNOW that is not really accurate)

(55 posts)Who is the bonehead who came up with the idea to use H202? I recently used it to help get rid of fungus gnats in my houseplants. The ratio for effective usage is 1 part H202 to 4 parts water. Do the math for the proper dilution in over 6 million gallons of water. To those who are worried about waterfowl, H202 in water breaks down very quickly, giving off lots of oxygen in the process. It is not harmful to animals and has no odor. The underlying problem here, which no one seems to have stated, is that the water source for the pool is the Potomac River. Years ago, they stopped using DC treated water due to the drought. Potomac water will always contain algae.

(3,612 posts)If this thing doesn't have filtration, constant skimming, regular super shock treatments AND a daily sweeping of the bottom and sides you lose! They have a mosquito breeding pool.

(56,958 posts)if they want to spend a lot of money, otherwise the thing is a lake/pond. it is going to have algae like any warm shallow body of water. even worse with a dark, heat absorbing bottom.

RFK has asked for volunteers to prove its efficacy. Sadly, hes unavailable himself. Something about brain worms dont like hydrogen peroxide.

(12,802 posts)If done in the right amounts it inhibits algae growth but wont harm fish and birds. I was thinking copper sulfate but it tends to stain, so the chelated copper is better.
Of course this would require testing and maintenance, but the people with the knowledge and intellegence were fired by musk so we get muck.
