Open Letter to Anonymous and the one they helped, Jane Doe

Anonymous...just THANK YOU.

You have given many rape victims hope. You have probably stopped the Rape Crew from ever raping again en masse. Individually, there is probably no hope for any of them, but your shining the light on the torture of a school girl in Steubenville has made everyone in that town think twice about what kind of people they are - and what kind of people they need to be.

They are sociopaths who hid this torture, but now the world is watching them like hawks. And now the schoolgirls in that town know that someone cares. NO ONE in Steubenville seemed to give much of a damn except one blogger ,but you can bet, thanks to you guys, EVERYONE in that town cares now, even if they are the scumsuckers who hurt this child or let her be hurt.

As a female, I am sick to death of girls and women being treated like nothing, like they don't matter. This girl matters to me. Her pain matters to me. The horror she went through matters to me. Others might dismiss it as a "so what?" I can't do that.

I know about that horror because her attackers showed us who they are. THEY did that. I didn't have to assume anything.

And I know that this young woman needs support, because the defense is going to attack her unmercifully. As if her gang rape weren't already enough. They are going to call this 16-year-old child a slut, a whore, say she was asking for it, find people to lie about her, attack her parents, her grades, her clothes, her friends. This is why rape goes unreported, and why she and her family backed down when the fucked up sick perverted prosecutor cajoled and betrayed this young woman - to protect the prosecutor's precious little rapist son.

In a just world, this would never happen. Second best would be for her attackers and their enablers to stand up and take their punishment. They and their town refused to do the right thing, so they got exposed by you.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Anonymous, for treating this girl's life as important, for caring so much about a human being others treated like trash.

Thank you, and to the girl herself, I am sorry they will see nothing better to do than attack you. You are 16. You should not have to be dealing with this crap because THE RAPE CREW and the SHERIFF in that town and the COACHES in that school and the PROSECUTOR who let her home be used as a place of your torture made really bad choices. Because they used you like you weren't even another person. I am so sorry.

Jane Doe, I hope you can stay strong as they continue to rape you for their own benefit.

You matter. You are not at fault. You DID NOT DESERVE THIS.

But we usually don't see the crime broadcast so well by the rapists.
In their own ugly way, they have shown just how torturous and soul-killing rape is. Now people understand what hideous scum do to their victims.

They didn't expect their criminal deeds to be spread around the world, did they? But thanks to Anonymous, people now understand this kind of torture of another human.

I don't think any of us wll hear of another gang rape without seeing those images, without hearing Nodianos further humiliating the victim. I think we understand it all much better because Anonymous was not afraid to show us the reality.

And I hope Jane Doe is able to get counseling, and to feel like a valued member of society. Rape victims often don't feel very valued at all.

To me, that child was treated worse than you treat an animal.

How do some young men grow up thinking that a HUMAN BEING is just something they can masturbate into and then toss away like a piece of trash? That a human being is a thing they can drug, piss on, abuse and throw to the ground, naked and half-dead?

And then party and laugh and celebrate their "accomplishment?" And then call HER names, as if they aren't the pigs?

I don't understand this way of viewing your fellow humans. Don't understand how some men and boys find this entertainment, find this even HUMAN. Even animals don't behave this way

What mechanism in our society gives some young males the idea that humans are just their playthings, and that even the most horrific things done to girls are "no big deal?" That their penis is really a weapon you use to torture and humiliate someone?

Steubenville is like so many small towns, salivating over football while the souls of their kids are destroyed.

Thanks again...

You put it well.

I think there's a clue contained in your phrase, too.

It reflects the fact that what boys and men do is valued while what girls and women do is not. And the converse as well--if it's done by females, it is less valuable or even specifically contemptible. For example, the proliferation of the word "douche" as an ultimate insult: an expression of the deepest disgust and rejection.

To be devalued as a group, taken as the defacto butt of jokes and used as a convenient t group for leering mockery and USED BY ENTERTAINMENT/ADVERTISING as "spicy" decoration is to be not truly human.

In a sex obsessed and macho society, of course females will not only be attacked for their identity as sexual commodities but they will also tend to learn that their only power or agency is their ability to get attention through attractiveness and ability to provide sex.

For example, in many many towns, teenage girls ache to be cheerleaders. Do I need to spell it out that cheerleaders--nameless non-individuals--are the modern eqivalent of concubines and harem girls given to and owned by male heroes? And that there is appeal in achieving that attention and value as an ornament to the powerful....

That archetype is still worshipped in our culture and so, is it any wonder that it plays out in destructive ways?

was talking about Ohio's obsession with football, and how if your kid doesn't play ball or cheerlead, they are considered losers. Even if they are high achieving students otherwise.

She pulled her younger girls out of cheerleading when they expected the 7-9 year olds to wear heavy makeup and dress provocatively "for the team."

It's 2012, and past time for humans to get their shit together.

I'm just glad to live in a time when people like Anonymous easily and thoroughly OUT the demons among us.

Some day, some way, we will view each human as having value, as more than a sum of their body parts, as far more sacred than a toy for one's entertainment.

I will keep fighting to see that day arrive, and I know you will as well.

Hopefully this young girl will get the health support and psychological counseling she needs to rise above it. The added benefit of exposing this is that it has gone global and people everywhere will be exposed to what is going on in our world. I hope that this topic comes up soon at school boards, town councils, and yes even church boards all over our country. Education and public notice that any and all physical assaults of any kind will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law is the most important step in eradicating this kind of behavior.

28. I totally agree - thanks Anon and Where Were the Parents?
Sat Jan 5, 2013, 06:28 PM
Jan 2013

I am surprised that no one has focused on the question - why were all these 16 year olds drinking alcohol (at THREE different parties) and why was there no curfew for 16 year olds?

Obviously an adult provided the alcohol and should also be arrested and put in jail.

What adult throws a big party with 16 year olds attending serving alcohol? I am surprised that no one asked this question because I would NEVER serve my kids alcohol and a 16 year old should be in the house (I don't care if we're talking weekends) by 10 pm - or they don't see the outside of day or inside of their computer for a long time.

Many people have said what Anon did was wrong - but we've all seen screwed up justice because coaches and police and mothers and fathers make good liars. I am so glad that finally someone cares about a child being kidnapped from party to party and having many others watch (including adults? there had to be adults there) while she is raped and urinated on.

Anon put this up and if he hadn't, those boys would have gotten away with it and imagine what great adults they would be. And I am fearful for the world when you have a callous 16 year old (don't care if alcohol was the reason) laugh about a person's misery and he was sooo smart, he put it on the internet (must be a Darwin award there somewhere).

please don't go there because that is akin to blaming the victim. According to newspaper reports the young woman (the victim) had told her parents she was spending the night at a friends house...

I am the mother of 5 and I know (from experience) that does not make her culpable nor her parents bad...

We need to change the culture this happens in! When my oldest was about 16 she told me she was going to spend the night at a friend's house. I had no reason to disbelieve her and at 1am I got a call from the local law enforcement office telling me my daughter was at the barracks. Seems she and her friend had gone to a party and an older party goer thought that maybe the girls were a bit too young to be at this particular party; and he called the police!!!

My daughter now works for Homeland Security...

32. Then who is at fault?
Sat Jan 5, 2013, 08:16 PM
Jan 2013

It was not akin to blaming the victim. The environment shouldn't have been there in the first place for this atrocious act to happen. Someone needs to take responsibility.

It wasn't just one 16 year who snuck into mom's liquor cabinet, it was a bunch of 16 years old that got drunk at three different parties, and all were out after midnight without parental supervision, correct? Obviously they had cell phones where parents could have checked on them.

I think it is a legitimate question to wonder where they got the alcohol (wouldn't you agree the person who provided the alcohol should be questioned?) From what I saw, seemed like all involved were drunk 16 year olds (including the ones taking pics) ... if that is the case, who is at fault? When it comes to your personal experience, did you call and talk with your child's friend's parents to make sure your daughter arrived. If I sent my child over her friend's house, I'd call to get assurances that parents were in attendance the whole time. If another parent is watching my child, then because I talked to them I could hold them somewhat responsible.

There has to be some kind of parental responsibility - it seems like all these kids came from good families, no? Maybe what you mean is that there should be definite laws in this culture - when you are 16, you should be home by 10pm - when you are 16, you are not allowed to drink alcohol and if you do there are consequences.

Yes, teenagers will do stupid, impulsive things. We did when i was a kid and ran around. But no one was ever raped, and had we seen one of our girlfriends treated this way, even the guys I hung with would have protected her, and the tough girls most certainly would have.

I hung out with the artists and the hippies and even some football players; we didn't need to abuse each other or commit violent crimes to have fun. I won't say there was no sex going on, but it was between consenting teenagers who either dated or hooked up for the night. Had we seen a girl drug in like this girl was, we would have kicked the guys' asses who did such a thing and cleaned her up and taken her home.

WE weren't saints, but our parties NEVER led to this type of torture or coverup.

There is NO excuse for rape, whether parents knew the kids were partying or they were clueless. If someone wants to suggest that lack of parental oversight is more a factor than a town that coddled and enabled the rapists - from Steubenville law enforcement to coaches to the town prosecutor - they see a very barbaric world, and there IS no hope for any of us.

Some of the kids who let this happen no doubt live in perpetual fear of Abdulla and his thugs in the Rape Crew. I hope today Abdalla feels just a TASTE of the gut-wrenching fear his corruption has spilled over an entire town.

Don't be an idiot - I was talking about a scared straight kind of thing - bad actions should have consequences (not allowed to go out; do chores in place of video games; being kicked off the football team, suspended from school and being forced to go to classes on good behavior and if they still don't get, some scared straight stuff like spending a day in jail to see if you want to continue your actions)

What would you suggest if you had a 16 year old kid who drinks alot on a regular basis? Leave him alone and hope he doesn't go out and gang rape someone?

Then I am idiot expecting people to be personally responsible for their actions. I said you were an idiot because you inferred that I meant gang rape as a consequence for underage drinking (are you suggesting?...).

If at age you are 16, you are considered a minor and not totally responsible, who is responsible for your actions? If your parents raised you right or if these young people were supervised by adults, there would not have been drunk teenagers and there would not have been a kidnapping and rape.

So you tell me, 'who's at fault?' - would you say the only fault in this whole matter was the two 16 year old footplayers and that's it. It wasn't their parents, it wasn't the 'it's ok to be boys' environment, it wasn't that all these 16 year olds seemed not to be supervised by any adults - it wasn't that, right?

Who's at fault?

Our culture tacitly allows rape, but the rapist is still at fault.

If your kid takes your car for a spin without your knowledge and then runs over someone, are you at fault? Are you supposed to watch the child 24/7?

You might wish you had been there to stop your child, but in the end, your kid made the decision and your kid is responsible. You will have to pay the damages from a minor child's actions BUT YOUR CHILD IS STILL AT FAULT.

However, I do agree that the parents in Steubenville appear to be clueless, and that any adult who provides alcohol to minors should be charged as a criminal. But the rapists decided on their own to torture a child, and they alone are AT FAULT.

Jan 2013

A while back at 10:30, TVs would put up a PSA that said 'It's 10:30 - do you know where your children are?' Responsible parenting means you can answer that question. Is freedom and fun being able to get drunk at 16? Maybe; but if you set rules and bring your kids up right, you're not picking them up from the police station at 1am.

If these parents knew where their kids were at at 10:30, this nightmare would not have happened.

Maybe I did grow up in a different world, where there was a sense of personal responsibility. My children have no problem with my rules. Kids need rules.

My kids saw the end of football games because there was adult supervision ... and yes I made sure my child got to his/her (esp her) destination ... I don't consider that overbearing ... when a cop comes to my door and says 'do you know where your 16 year old is?' I have an answer. I must have done the right thing (or my kids did the right thing) as my kids never got in trouble, name never appeared in the news, nor ended up in jail.

56. I am still in shock over this story...
Sat Jan 5, 2013, 10:22 PM
Jan 2013

I don't think I will ever not be in shock over this story. I was traumatized by the movie The Accused and I didn't even watch it. I read about it extensively even though I knew it was going to affect me in a bad way. Just like I can't seem to help myself from reading about this story. It's like a scab that itches. I know I shouldn't scratch it, yet I do.

I think I know why it bothers me so much or at least part of the reason. The people that did this will never get what they deserve. It is not possible for a person who isn't depraved to give them what they deserve. We can put them in jail where they will be treated humanely. They can be shunned by society. But, that is something they brought on themselves. So, they wouldn't be innocent victims of being shunned. Colleges could decide to not grant scholarships or admission. But, again that is something they brought on themselves by their own depraved actions. They will possibly have less consequences to their behavior than a person who smoked a joint and got caught while attending college through a pell grant and student loans. That is what is really messed up here. People who commit life changing violent crimes get less punishment than non violent offenders. So, I keep scratching the scab that itches and I wish that I could stop. And I really wish that these things didn't happen that keep reminding me that the world is a scary and dangerous place for our young people.

61. I know what you mean

from babies killed at school to young girls at the hands of The Big Rapists in Steubenville, we have a very dangerous, sociopathic society that fails at its most basic job: keeping its children safe from harm, from murder, from violence.

I finally got on the NYT article and am close to tears over the girl's mother's words:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/17/sports/high-school-football-rape-case-unfolds-online-and-divides-steubenville-ohio.html?pagewanted=all&_r=1&

At a hearing last month, the girl’s mother said her daughter remained distraught and did not want to attend school. The girl’s friends have ostracized her, and parents have kept their children away from her, the mother said.

The girl does not sleep much, said the mother, who testified that she often hears her daughter crying at night.
The mother said the obsession with high school football in Steubenville is partly to blame. It shocked her that Saccoccia testified as a character witness for the defendants last month, she said.

In the courtroom that day, she remembered thinking, how dare he?
“Just Coach Reno saying he would testify for those boys, saying he was so proud of them, that speaks volumes,” she said. “All those football players are put on a pedestal over there, and it’s such a status symbol to play for Big Red, the culture is so different over there.”

The mother added: “I do feel like they’ve had preferential treatment, and it’s unreal, almost like we’re part of a TV show. It’s like a bad “CSI” episode. What those boys did was disgusting, disgusting, and for people to stand up for them, that’s disgusting, too.”

So this school girl, an athlete and an excellent student, has had her entire LIFE destroyed. THAT'S what rape does - it isn't the way some men apparently see it: To them, rape is some guy who forcibly masturbates into a girl and zips up his pants and the horror is over.

NO way. The horror and the shame and the guilt and the pain go on sometimes for the rest of a victim's life.

And that goddamned Saccoccia makes me ASHAMED to be half Italian. Threatening a reporter like he's some kind of GANGBANGING THUG?

SACCOCIA was directly responsible for who was allowed to play after the fact. He should be PUBLICLY SHAMED every day he walks his Godforsaken town. And the Principal sounds like a scaredy cat weasel who lets the coaches run his school.

I just hope that the young woman knows so many care.

I hope, especially after reading that she is having a rough time, that she has found a brief bit of solace in Anonymous sticking up for her and exposing the criminal slime that is Steubenville, Ohio.

here's a for you. Just spend a moment sending love to this child, any time you get overwhelmed with the anger. I try to do that.
It works sometimes.

She needs all the good vibes she can get.

62. What is one daughter to an entire football-crazed town?
Sat Jan 5, 2013, 11:10 PM
Jan 2013

Nothing.

The psycho, corrupt, selfish, football-frenzied town, its school, its kids and its adults and officials are basically saying to the victim's family: "Your daughter is just a piece of trash we will use and discard. Too bad for you."

"NOW LET'S PLAY BALL! GO BIG RED RAPISTS! WE'RE SO PROUD OF YOU ALL!"

That's how psycho THAT town is.

Anonymous says she IS something: a valued member of our society. I just hope she knows that fact, despite what the Godforsaken town of Stupidville thinks about schoolgirls.

Either way, they deserve thanks as well for showing us the faces of evil in Stupidville.

The rapists just dumped her in front of her house like an empty beer can.

They are sick, sociopathic, empty souls.

Okay, time to send love to that child again, before I start thinking evil thoughts instead.

Unfortunately - there are many towns where male sports - esp. Football and Basketball - are about the only thing small towns rally around.

It seems to get worse and worse - this glorification of male violence. "Heroes." It's disgusting.

These assholes need to know that there are real men in this country of all political stripes, races, and creeds that will not put up with this shit. If you rape, if you are involved in a gang rape, you are a pariah to me. I will not help you.I will not hire you. I will not teach you. If you are hurt on the side of the road, and i know it is you, I will not stop. You are nothing. You are less than human. This real man has had enough of this bullshit, and it is time for all real men to rise up and say ENOUGH!

I really needed to read your words.

There are far more good men in the world than evil ones. The evil ones simply grab all the power they can because they know without that hold over other people, they can't do their filthy, disgusting, horrific and selfish deeds.

Thank you for your support of the young victim. Send her all the love and thoughts of peace and strength you can muster. She is having a really tough time.

And a for you

Jane Doe needs all of our thoughts and prayers ( if one is the praying sort )

As for farm chores, thank you. I feel very overwhelmed at the present time and your words were very sweet. You are welcome here to Camp Tsiyu any time even if you don't want to work!

I laid awake freaking out the other night about what I was going to do about a particular problem. The next morning there was a message from my neighbor - a local school administrator - asking if she and her family could help me. They walk by my place every night and they noticed I needed some help and just offered it.

I love my community. I hope someday that Jane Doe can feel embraced and loved by a community that cares. She has been through hell and it's only just begun.

I just hope she knows this, I really do. I wish I could just hug her and tell her how much she matters.

As the right wing gained power. What kind of messages does it send to men when the Republican party does everything in it power to take away rights from women and nothing is really said about it. Some men seem to believe that since the Republican can get away with it they should also get away with doing bad things. Far to often they do get away with it. This nation has been going down hill ever since people like Limbaugh were given a right to lie on the air waves. There are far to many eager to believe anything that garbage like Limbaugh says. It only going to get worse, until we stop putting up with the lies and demand that the media tell the truth. I know this is only one of many things wrong but I can only put some much on here.

I'm an emotional wreck and found your post so inspiring.

I tend to get a tad obsessed when researching a story, and have spent the last two days reading about the "rape crew." The good people in town are intimidated into silence by their corrupt leaders. I just came across a tweet posted to an Anonymous Twitter account, suggesting gang rape is generational in Steubenville. Perhaps the fathers of the young men who committed this despicable crime, passed the tradition down to their sons. I'll be posting the tweet in a new thread soon.

87. This story has haunted me as well
Sun Jan 6, 2013, 03:00 PM
Jan 2013

I forced myself to watch the video and read the Anonymous site. As I read through all the posts here I kept thinking about the fact that Jane Doe was unconscious during all of this and likely doesn't remember anything after they knocked her out. Michael's "she's so dead" ranting is, unfortunately, possibly a reality in that something like this can kill your soul if you don't get the proper tools to recovery.

They weren't drunk when they planned this, they had the drug ready and waiting for her. She can remember the pain of the injuries caused by what they did to her, but the very fact that she doesn't know for sure just how bad it may have been, how many of these maggots raped her, who might have pictures of her being treated like a thing, is going to be torturous for her in her road to recovery, if in fact she ever really can.

I truly hope that any other victims who have kept silent will come forward and embrace and support her. It helps to know you're not alone and maybe they can all help each other reclaim their power and self respect. It's going to be a long road and I hope this girl will not have to attend any court procedures, that any testimony of her memory of that night can be done by deposition with a mental health professional.

You don't get over this, it changes your life forever, but it doesn't have to destroy you. What doesn't kill us can make us stronger if we can focus our anger where it is deserved instead of on ourselves. We all have an inner warrior, we just need to find it and empower it.

The allegations made by Anonymous of the depth of crime and it's connections to the very ones who are supposed to be focused on justice in this town, need to be investigated at a Federal level, IMO. The whole culture of this town needs to change.
