https://www.theguardian.com/football/2026/jul/18/white-house-backs-argentina-team-falklands-banner-world-cup-semi-finalThe White House has backed Argentinas footballers who displayed a banner supporting their countrys claim to the Falklands Islands after their World Cup semi-final victory against England.
In a fractious match in Atlanta on Wednesday, some players held up a banner after Argentinas 2-1 win that said: Las Malvinas son Argentinas using the countrys term for the South Atlantic islands.
Keir Starmer supported calls for Fifa to investigate the incident on Friday and appeared to back Spain ahead of the World Cup final against Argentina.
But Andrew Giuliani, the head of the White House Fifa taskforce, defended Argentinas players, saying the US believed in free speech.

I hate these people.
Go Spain!

(24,803 posts)they see potential ownership of the Islands. Yes, the WH will back stab Argentina.
As to free speech here in the USA, apparently free speech only pertains to who the WH feel deserves it which mean "them" and the cult only.

(83,492 posts)Not being into sports, I had no idea about Argentina's initiative in the 19th & 20th centuries to attract Southern Europeans to Argentina.
A friend enlightened me to the fact that Argentina is the only WC team to have no Black players. Grrrrrrr
She shared that many people are unaware of this because it happened so long ago, but the roots run deep.
GO SPAIN!!!!!

Argentina, it was the Nazi Concentration Camp guards favorite destination after WWII, wasn't it?
The Nazis that didn't make it to Nuremberg made it to Buenos Aires.

(14,881 posts)Next to the US, that is. Have you nothiced that their team is all white? That's not an accident, people. Argentinians DO NOT LIKE people of other races. They have been very vocally nasty about Mexico, Colombia, and other Latino countries, to the point where fans from those nations were cheering for ENGLAND in that game and will likely cheer for spain in the champinship.
There's an old joke about Argentinians, told to me by a native Argentinian who was a flatmate of a guy I was dating at the time: "Argentinians are a bunch of Italians who speak Spanish, act like Germans, and wish to God they were British." (This was, of course, before both the Falklands War and Pope Francis, but I suspect it's still true from what I've seen at the World Cup)

(78 posts)Do FIFA members get that list after someone pricks their finger and burns a saint card in their hands?
You can do a lot of things.
But you cannot babyface FIFA under any circumstances. Trump versus FIFA is a fight where Im cheering for the meteor.
Im also strongly of the opinion that if you cant talk insane shit over grudges that date back hundreds of years in international sports
..whats even the point? Nationalism at sporting events should always be right in the cusp of violence. That makes them spicy.
