WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)Just hours after being sworn in at the U.S. Capitol, the freshman class of House Republicans said that they were disappointed that they failed to shut down the government on their first day in office.
We were all like, O.K., were sworn in, lets shut this thing down, said freshman Rep. Byron Ernie (R-Kentucky). We were all pretty bummed that the government just kept running.
Rep. Ernie acknowledged that it might have been overly optimistic of the freshman Republicans to expect to engineer a government shutdown on their very first day, but bringing the government to a random standstill was the whole reason we became Republicans, he said.
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Virginia) chuckled good-naturedly at the ambitions of the high-spirited G.O.P. freshmen, telling reporters, I remember what it was like to be young and full of big ideas about crippling our historic institutions for no discernible reason whatsoever. Theres nothing like your first time.
Surveying the cherubic faces of the incoming Republicans, he said, Theyre like kids who want to close down a candy store.
Looking beyond the disappointment of his first day, Rep. Ernie said he was looking forward to that magical day when he and his fellow Republican freshmen get to participate in their very first government shutdown: Well be paralyzing the government in the same building where John Boehner and Eric Cantor did it, and Newt Gingrich before them. Its like playing basketball in the same arena as Michael Jordan.

(18,641 posts)This is a 2-1 democratic district, so there was no chance she'd be replacing our beloved Tim Ryan for congress, but she promised to "end Obamacare on her first day in office".
She is a pediatrician of Philippine decent and used that as the beginning, middle, and end of her campaign platform. She didn't discuss fiscal matters or foreign affairs, just "Obamacare", which she delivered in her thick accent, which seemed odd to many since she was born here to wealthy immigrant parents.
The most ridiculous part of her campaign was that she promised that as soon as she eliminated Obamacare, she would return full time to her private practice. Yep, she was going to waltz into The House Of Representatives, take the oath, repealed health care, and get back in time for her afternoon appointments.
I give her credit for her incredible energy level and ambition, but to me she just came off as fearful that she would look out into her waiting room and see a poor person, forcing her to seek payment from the govt. ...and stupid, she came off as very stupid.
She must have thought no other republican ever thought of repealing Obamacare.
She lost miserably.
