Hey, I've got an idea ... let's label anyone who believes in reasonable gun control regulation ...

as a gun-grabbing Constitution-shredder, and anyone who owns a firearm as a paranoid gun nut with a little dick!
That should cetainly lead to reasonable people being able to find some middle ground.

Apparently, there is no middle ground in this arid climate. You are either heartless, or your heart is so large that other organs are not worthy of accommodation.

I hardly even visit anymore. It's supposed to be "Democratic Underground". It's turned into "If you're not way further to the left of George McGovern on every single political view, just shut up and get the hell out. You are no longer welcome here".

I smoke, am a christian, white, male, don't own a gun but used to.

If there is one thing I have learned here it is that people like me are the bad guys.

I am for choice - whether it be guns, smoking in bars, abortion, etc (but have learned that many here are anti-choice on just about everything but one subject).

Don't blame guns for crime (I blame the users), I don't think most of us are terrorists that need the TSA all up in our buisiness and that people with guns are not going to rush out and kill everyone (ie - I don't think all muslims want to kill us and all gun owners do either).

to have an unemotional discussion about things that would lead to less gun violence that could actually get passed....I self deleted and locked in 15 posts over the condescending snide remarks from some.

You just aren't going to get a real discussion on the subject so I gave up.

moral certitude, and ideological symbolism of some sort.

I also have to add that the definition of right wing opinion isn't exactly uniform either.
I see right wing as economic and level of authoritarianism. Maybe more simply as constriction of power to the few versus the many.

Some of those most hollering about right wing talking points and such are generally spouting plenty themselves and others who are deeply authoritarian to the point where it is clear they don't actually believe in civil liberties, essentially Stalinist in outlook. Others that think Democrat=liberal, Republican=conservative, and bipartisan=moderate with little thought from there.
Then there are the special people who essentially state "disagreement with me is____" depending on where they see themselves.

The same thing would occur if DU allowed anti-abortion or anti-gay opinions. Pro-gun opinions are too far right for the majority of DU to accept or even discuss. This is why the gungeon is one of the most trashed groups on DU.
